Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. --- Another Saint John Sea Dogs single-season team record was established on Friday night, as overage goaltender Marco Cousineau registered his third shutout since joining the club in late-December. The Anaheim Ducks prospect made 32 saves in backstopping the Sea Dogs to a 4-0 victory over the P.E.I. Rocket at the Charlottetown Civic Centre, picking up First Star of the Game honours in the process.
At the other end of the ice, Evan Mosher surrendered four goals on 24 shots faced between the pipes for P.E.I., resultantly suffering his 13th defeat of the season.
Nick Petersen, Tomas Jurco, Stephen MacAulay, and Christian Morin all scored for Saint John in the impressive road win, while Nathan Beaulieu and Zack Phillips dished out two assists apiece. The Sea Dogs' defensive special teams unit, meanwhile, turned in a perfect 8-for-8 performance on the evening during what was a penalty-filled affair.
Saint John scored the game's first goal 8:24 into the first period, as freshman forward Zack Phillips carried the puck from his own end to well into P.E.I. territory prior to hitting a streaking Nick Petersen in stride with a picture-perfect backhand pass. Petersen proceeded to dupe Mosher with a nifty deking maneuver and finished the play off by tucking home the 39th goal of his overage campaign.
Veteran blue-liner Christian Morin doubled the visitors' lead at the 13:05 mark of period number two, pouncing on a loose puck in the low slot and roofing a backhand shot over Mosher's shoulder to improve his 2009-10 goals total to seven. The Sea Dogs went up 3-0 six minutes later when an innocent-looking dump-in attempt by Simon Després took an unexpected bounce along the boards in Prince Edward Island's zone, ultimately giving import winger Tomas Jurco a vacant net to shoot at as Mosher had abandoned his crease in anticipation of retrieving the seemingly-trapezoid-area-bound puck.
With nine seconds remaining in the middle frame, sophomore centre Stephen MacAulay further added to the Sea Dogs' lead, ripping a bullet of a wrist shot to the back of the Rocket's net after Saint John put on a clinic in puck movement deep in enemy territory.
The final twenty minutes of regulation saw Cousineau adding ten saves to his nightly total, thwarting his former teammates throughout the stanza in laying claim to his record-setting shutout.
Up next for the Sea Dogs is a Sunday night tilt with the Wildcats at Moncton Coliseum. The puck drops at 8pm as the Port City's major junior squad looks to wrap up their regular season schedule in winning fashion in front of a national audience on Rogers Sportsnet.
