Bradenton Marauders News Release
DUNEDIN, Fla. - A go-ahead two-run homer by Jakob Goldfarb highlighted a five-run rally Sunday afternoon for the Marauders, who defeated the Dunedin Blue Jays, 13-4, to win the opening series of the season.
The Marauders (2-1) fell behind in the second inning when Jose Ferrer delivered a bases-loaded sacrifice fly for the Blue Jays (1-2), and Adriel Sotolongo hit a two-run homer in the fourth for a 3-0 Dunedin lead.
Blue Jays starter Rafael Ohashi struck out a career-high ten batters and held Bradenton hitless over four innings. But in the fifth, the Marauders surged back against reliever Dahian Santos (0-1). After a Dunedin fielding error and a Luke Brown infield single, a wild pitch allowed both runners to advance. Jacob Gonzalez then beat out an RBI-infield single for the first Marauders run, and when Tsung-Che Cheng followed with an RBI-single to center, center fielder Dasan Brown misplayed the ball, allowing Gonzalez to score the tying run as Cheng reached third base. After a strikeout, Goldfarb launched a 1-0 pitch from Santos over the right field wall for a two-run homer, putting the Marauders in front, 5-3.
Cheng also provided a defensive highlight in the third inning. When Dunedin's Damiano Palmegiani tripled to the wall in left-center, left fielder Luke Brown threw to cutoff man Cheng, who threw a strike from shallow left-center to home plate to retire Palmegiani, who attempted to circle the bases for an inside-the-park home run.
Dunedin crept within one run in the seventh inning, as Marauders left-hander Jake Sweeney allowed an RBI-single to Rikelbin de Castro. But Sweeney avoided further trouble, getting a strikeout and a flyout to end the inning and preserve the 5-4 lead.
In the eighth, the Marauders padded their lead, as two walks and a hit-by-pitch set the stage for Alexander Mojica, who slugged a grand slam to left field off Blue Jays right-hander Julian Valdez, stretching Bradenton's lead to 9-4.
Bradenton added four more runs in the ninth. Three singles, two walks, and a hit-by-pitch produced frequent traffic on the basepaths, and the Marauders took full advantage. Two wild pitches by Ryan Boyer plated one run each, and a dropped catch with two out by left fielder Angel del Rosario allowed two more Marauders runners to cross home.
Dante Mendoza (1-0) earned the win in relief in his Marauders debut, tossing two and one-third innings of scoreless ball. Nick Dombkowski and Valentin Linarez held the Jays scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively.
Right-hander Luis Oviedo, pitching on rehab assingment for the Pirates, pitched the first inning for the Marauders and retired all three batters he faced on fourteen total pitches.
Seven of the nine men in the Marauders lineup recorded a hit, and eight of the nine reached base safely in the game.
The Marauders will play their home opener at LECOM Park on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. against the Lakeland Flying Tigers.
