FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Mighty Mussels lost their lead late after allowing four unanswered runs Friday in a 7-4 loss to the Bradenton Marauders at Hammond Stadium.
Mussels' (50-56, 16-24) pitching struggled, allowing 11 hits while walking nine batters. They have now walked 46 batters over the first four games of the series.
With two outs in the top of the first, Garret Forrester singled and Charles McAdoo walked to place runners at first and second for Yordany De Los Santos, who lined an RBI single to center that put Bradenton (61-44, 26-14) up 1-0. Later in the frame, Omar Alfonzo drove a two-run single to right that extended the lead to 3-0.
Still down by three in the bottom of the fourth, the Mussels loaded the bases after Nate Baez and Alec Sayre singled, and Jay Harry was hit by a pitch. With one out, Maddux Houghton seared a grounder down the right-field line for a two-run double that cut the deficit to 3-2. On the play, Sayre advanced to third, which allowed him to score on a sacrifice fly by Gregory Duran that tied the game at 3-3.
In the bottom of the fifth, Baez beat out an infield single on a grounder to short. On the same play, De Los Santos made an errant throw to first that allowed Baez to advance to second. After two wild pitches in the inning, Baez scored to give the Mussels a 4-3 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Juan Jerez and McAdoo walked and executed a double steal to place runners at second in third. With one out, De Los Santos sent a sacrifice fly to center that tied the game at 4-4. The next hitter was Alfonzo, who looped a single to shallow left that scored McAdoo to give the Marauders a 5-4 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Bradenton tacked on two more on a sacrifice fly from Jerez and an RBI single from Forrester to cap the scoring at 7-4.
The Mussels will start Miguel Angel Boadas (0-2, 8.53) against Hunter Barco (0-0, 0.00) of the Marauders on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m. with coverage beginning at 5:45 p.m. on the Mighty Mussels Baseball Network.
