Manriquez Lifts 'Riders Past Hounds, 5-3
July 23, 2007 - Texas League (TL1)
Frisco RoughRiders News Release
Despite playing from behind most of the game, the RoughRiders were able to rally and mount a sixth inning comeback to defeat Midland 5-4 Monday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark. Luis Mendoza (11-1) went seven strong innings and is now tied for the Texas League lead in victories. The âRiders first three batters combined to go 6-for-11 with three runs scored, but the big hit came on a Salomon Manriquez three run home run, his second homer in as many nights.
Midland did all their scoring off Mendoza in the second frame. Richie Robnett opened the inning with a single and scored on a triple by Vasili Spanos. Javier Herrera followed with a two-run homer to put the Rockhounds up 3-0. The âRider bats stayed quiet until the fourth when Anthony Webster singled, stole second, and scored on a German Duran RBI single. In the sixth inning, Frisco got within one as Casey Benjamin doubled and Duran singled to put runners at the corners. With Brandon Boggs at bat, the âRiders effectively executed a double steal as Benjamin broke for home after Midland's catcher Anthony Recker unsuccessfully attempted to throw out Duran at second. With Frisco still down by one, Boggs walked to bring up Manriquez who put the Andy Shipman offering into the left field seats to give the âRiders the 5-3 lead. In the ninth inning, the Rockhounds got within one as Robnett hit a solo shot off the scoreboard in right field, but Kea Kometani entered the game to get the final three outs.
Mendoza allowed three runs on five hits in his seven innings of work. He struck out six and walked only one. Shipman (4-6) lasted 5 2/3 innings surrendering all five runs on seven hits. He struck out four, but walked three. Ingram allowed a run in his inning of work and allowed a few base runners in the ninth, but Kometani was able to escape the jam and notched his seventh save of the year.
With the win, the âRiders are now a game above .500 at 16-15, but remain 4.5 games behind first place San Antonio. Manriquez's 15th home run of the year is only two behind the team lead and three behind the league lead.
The âRiders and Hounds will battle Tuesday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark. Time of the game is set for 7 p.m
