July 23, 2007 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release
Tulsa Drillers Hitting Coach and former St. Louis Cardinals player Mike Coolbaugh passed away on Sunday night, after being struck in the temple by a line drive during Tulsa's game in North Little Rock against the Arkansas Travelers.
He is survived by his wife Mandy and his two sons, Jacob and Joseph. The Coolbaughs are expecting another child in October.
Tulsa Drillers' Team President Chuck Lamson announced that the Drillers have set up a memorial fund to benefit the Coolbaugh family. Checks can be made payable to the Mike Coolbaugh Memorial Fund and sent to:
Mike Coolbaugh Memorial Fund
c/o Spirit Bank
1800 S. Baltimore Ave.
Tulsa, OK 74119
All proceeds collected will go directly to the Coolbaugh family.
Multiple Texas League games on Monday have been cancelled because of Coolbaugh's tragic passing, including the Springfield Cardinals' game against Arkansas in North Little Rock, as well as Tulsa's game in Wichita.
Springfield's game will be made up as part of a double-header on Saturday, August 25th, when the Cardinals return to play the Travelers.
Coolbaugh spent one season in the St. Louis Cardinals' system in 2002, appearing in 116 games for the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds before playing in five games with St. Louis.
Coolbaugh played briefly for Triple-A Omaha (KC) in 2006, retiring at the end of the season. He had been with Tulsa for less than three weeks.
His brother Scott, who played for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1994, is currently the Hitting Coach for the Frisco RoughRiders of the Texas League.
All Minor League teams throughout the country are being asked by Minor League President Mike Moore to observe a moment of silence before Monday's games, as well as to fly their flags at half-mast in memory of Coolbaugh.
The Springfield Cardinals and everyone in the St. Louis Cardinals' family extend their deepest sympathies and wish to send their thoughts and prayers to the Coolbaugh family, the Tulsa Drillers, the Colorado Rockies and the entire baseball community.
