Arkansas Travelers News Release

Springfield, Missouri - Seth Maness set the tone on Tuesday night as the Springfield Cardinals rode a nine-inning complete game to a 4-1 victory over the Arkansas Travelers at Hammons Field. Maness (3-0) fired the first nine-inning CG in the Texas League on just 84 pitches and gave up just five hits while striking out four against no walks. Johnny Hellweg (2-5) also threw a complete game going eight innings, but surrendered four runs to suffer the loss.

The loss is the Travs 14th in 19 games and drops them to 24-39 on the season. Springfield improves to 33-30 including wins in seven of nine games.

Maness was in control from the start and set down the first six Travs batters. He ever threw more than 11 pitches in an inning and never more than five to one batter.

Hellweg had some control issues early. He walked Springfield's first-inning leadoff batter Kolten Wong, but got Oscar Taveras to ground into a double play. Hellweg issued walks to the first two Cardinals batters in the second inning putting Chris Swauger and Jake Shaffer on base. Kyle Conley ran a full count before blasting a three-run homer (9) to left field.

The Travs threatened Maness in the third inning putting runners at first and third base with one out on singles by Angel Castillo and Rian Kiniry. Segura though hit into a double play with a grounder right at shortstop Greg Garcia. Going into the top of the sixth inning, Maness has set down seven straight Travs before Jimmy Swift hit a leadoff single. Maness then got his second double play of the night when Kiniry chopped to Garcia. Segura followed with a solo home run (4) to left field to get the Travs on the board.

The Cardinals got that run right back in the bottom of the sixth inning as Taveras doubled and scored on a two-out single by Jake Shaffer.

Maness cruised the rest of the way with outs from 10 of the last 11 Travs batters to finish his first career complete game.

Time of game was 1:54 and the paid attendance was 4,631.

Now 1-6 on this road trip the Travs play the trip finale on Wednesday night at Hammons Field sending Ariel Pena (3-4, 3.28 ERA) to the mound against Springfield's Trevor Rosenthal (5-5, 2.73). First pitch is set for 7:08 p.m.
