Manaea Shuts Down Keys' Bats in 6-0 Loss

WILMINGTON, DE - Wilmington southpaw Sean Manaea tossed 7 1/3 scoreless innings and combined with one reliever to shutout the Keys 6-0 on Saturday night at Frawley Stadium.
The Frederick (50-58/18-23) offense mustered just four hits against Manaea (4-7), who completed more than seven innings for the first time in his professional career. A second inning two-out RBI double by Jared Schlehuber is all the Blue Rocks needed against Sebastian Vader.
Vader (1-4) pitched his best game of the season, but was still saddled with his fourth straight loss, a career-long. The right-hander lasted six innings for the second time in five starts with the Keys, allowed two hits, two runs, walked three and struck out four.
Wilmington scored its first run against Vader in the second, as the righty walked Cam Gallagher with two outs, and two pitches later, Schlehuber roped a ball down the left field line for an RBI double and 1-0 Blue Rocks lead.
The Keys didn't have many chances against Manaea throughout, as the Kansas City Royals prospect has tossed 12.1 scoreless innings over his last two starts. The best opportunity was crushed by centerfielder Bubba Starling in the top of the fourth. Adrian Marin singled to start the frame and tagged up to second on a routine flyout to left by Trey Mancini. The next batter, Chih-Hsien Chiang, singled up the middle, and Marin rounded third to come home. Starling hurled a bullet into the glove of the catcher, and Marin was out at the plate.
Vader surrendered a leadoff home run to Zane Evans in the fourth to make it 2-0 Blue Rocks. The only two hits given out by the righty ended up scoring both runs against Vader.
Jimmy Yacabonis replaced Vader in the seventh and allowed four runs on two hits, two walks, and a hit batter. After the Garden State native induced a pop out by Gallagher, he hit Schlehuber, walked Daniel Rockett and then issued a base on balls to Terrance Gore. Jack Lopez smacked a two-run single, Raul Mondesi lifted a sacrifice fly to make it 5-0, and Starling doubled in Lopez for a 6-0 advantage.
Manaea recorded the first out in the eighth, but gave way after a four-pitch walk to Jerome Pena. Daniel Stumpf came in and retired the minimum through 1 2/3 frames.
The loss for the Keys forces a rubber match tomorrow at 5:05 p.m. RHP Mark Blackmar (6-1, 3.55) goes for the Keys against RHP Glenn Sparkman (6-2, 1.44) for Wilmington.
