Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Winston-Salem scored five runs in the third inning and held on for a 5-4 win over the Lynchburg Hillcats in front of 5,922 fans at BB&T Ballpark on Saturday night.
The win, coupled with Myrtle Beach's loss to Salem, gives the Dash sole possession of first place in the Southern Division for the first time since June 27, when they were 6-3 in the season's second half standings.
Winston-Salem (23-20, 53-59) trailed 2-0 in the third inning when the bats came alive. Justin Jirschele started the rally with a double to right against Lynchburg starter Cody Scarpetta (3-5). Keenyn Walker doubled Jirschele home to make it 2-1. Cleuluis Rondon singled and Courtney Hawkins walked to load the bases. Jason Coats hit a sacrifice fly to deep right field, plating Walker to tie the contest at 2-2.
With two outs, Joey DeMichele lifted a fly ball to shallow center field, dropping in front of Will Skinner for a hit. Rondon and Hawkins hustled home while DeMichele scooted to second with a two-run double. Omar Narvaez chased DeMichele home with a two-bagger to right, giving the Dash a 5-2 lead.
Lynchburg (21-21, 55-57) tried to make a comeback in the late innings. In the seventh, Joe Odom drew a leadoff walk against Dash reliever Brad Goldberg and later scored on a balk by Ben Brewster, cutting the margin to 5-3.
In the eighth inning, David Nick's broken-bat single to center field against Brewster scored Levi Hyams, making it a 5-4 game.
Winston-Salem closer Brandon Hardin pitched a scoreless ninth to notch his fifth save of the season, giving the Dash their sixth win in the last seven games.
Dash starter Brandon Brennan (1-0) was solid in his High-A debut, allowing two runs and six hits in five innings. The 23-year-old allowed a two-run double to Odom in the third inning, putting the Hillcats on the board first.
Winston-Salem will go for the three-game sweep of Lynchburg tomorrow in the series finale. The Dash will send right-hander Tyler Danish (4-2, 3.10 ERA) to the mound, while the Hillcats counter with lefty Daniel Watts (2-3, 5.18 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
In addition to Danish's start, 2014 first round draft pick Carlos Rodon is expected to pitch out of the bullpen for Winston-Salem on Sunday. For tickets to the game, visit wsdash.com or call (336) 714-2287.
