Salem Red Sox Game Notes
August 2, 2014 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release
The Salem Red Sox look for a third straight win as they play game two of a three game set in rainy Myrtle Beach. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
Light Report: Pat Light has been a stud in the Sox rotation of late. Over his last six starts, Light is 4-1 with a 2.06 ERA (8 ER/35 IP). Light has gone at least five innings in all six starts, and gone at least six innings in four of the six. Pat has allowed just 28 hits over his last 35 innings, after allowing 20 hits in his previous 6.1 innings pitched. Light's threw a career high seven innings in his last outing against Myrtle Beach. The New Jersey native has been as good as anyone in the Carolina League in his last two starts, allowing a lone run on just six hits in 13 innings pitched (0.69 ERA).
Matty J: Sox OF Matty Johnson continued his hot stretch with two hits including a home run last night. This came on the heels of an excellent month of July, in which Johnson finished with a .323 aver- age (30/93), and a .447 on base percentage. Johnson scored 26 runs, walked 19 times, and drove in 16 runs in July. He now leads the Sox with 30 multi-hit games. Matty has hit in five straight games, with
a .434 average (9/19) over that span.
July Check: The Salem Red Sox posted both their highest team bat- ting average and lowest staff ERA of any month this season during July. However the Sox finished the month 11-16, their worst record of any month. The ERA and average were both second best in the Caro- lina league in the month, but the Sox finished a game behind Lynch- burg for the league's worst record in July. Despite finishing the month five games under .500, Salem outscored its opponents 115- 111 in July. Nine of Salem's 16 July losses were by two runs or less.
#30: Former Salem Red Sox Anthony Ranaudo made his major league debut last night, picking up the victory for the Boston Red Sox. Ranaudo scattered four hits and two runs against the Yankees in six innings of work. Ranaudo's debut makes him the 30th former Salem Red Sox to make the show since Salem became a Boston affil- iate in 2009. Ranaudo spent the majority of 2011 in the Roanoke Valley, compiling a 5-5 record and 4.33 ERA in 16 games with Salem.
#31?: A day after Anthony Ranaudo made his MLB debut, former Salem Red Sox catcher Dan Butler was called up by Boston from AAA Pawtucket this afternoon after David Ross was placed on the DL. Butler will become the 31st player from Salem to make the show since 2009. Butler was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2009 and has worked his way up the organizational ranks. He spent parts of 2010 and 2011 in Salem, hitting .258 with 12 homers and 83 RBIs in 126 games with the Sox. A full list of the 31 players is on page 17.
Notable Nuggets: The Salem Sox are just 7-21 against Potomac and Frederick this season, while they are 44-36 against the rest of the Carolina League. In the second half of the season, Salem is 2-13 against the Keys and P-Nats, and 16-9 against everyone else.
The Sox eight and nine hole hitters were 4/7, scoring all four runs last night. Over the last three games, Salem's eight and nine hitters are 10/23 (.435) with six runs scored and 5 RBIs.
