Mallards Win 11-1 over Bombers, Move Within One Win of Playoff Berth

Battle Creek, MI - July 1, 2013. The Madison Mallards (20-11) tallied 17 hits and Luke Staub (George Washington) allowed only two hits in eight innings in their 11-1 win over the Battle Creek Bombers (13-19) to retain their first place spot in the Northwoods League South Division standings.

With the win, the Mallards need to win only one game either Tuesday or Wednesday against the La Crosse Loggers to capture the Northwoods League South Division First Half Championship.

Mallards starter Luke Staub (George Washington) notched his third win in as many starts by striking out five and walking one in his eight innings of work and is now 3-2 on the season. He capped off his performance by needing only five pitches in the eighth inning and struck out the last batter he faced.

The Mallards batted around twice by plating five runs in the fifth inning and four more in the seventh to put the game away. All of the fifth inning runs came with two outs while two of their seventh inning runs were of the two-out variety.

Left fielder Joe McCarthy (Virginia) provided the Mallards with their other two runs in the top of the third with a one-out single that scored Mike Reuvekamp (California) and Erik Forgione (Washington).

Bombers designated hitter Kade Scivicque (SW Missouri State) provided the lone bright spot for Battle Creek. He led off the fifth with triple down the left field line and came around to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of shortstop Mark Weist (Spring Arbor) a batter later. Leadoff hitter Cam Gibson (Michigan State) had the only other Bombers hit by leading off the first with a single.

Mallards reliever Ben Neumann (Northern Illinois) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth and struck out a batter to close things out.

Catcher Jason Goldstein (Illinois) was the lone Mallards batter without a hit but scored two runs. Center fielder Luke Meeteer (UW-Milwaukee) finished a perfect 4-for-4 with a pair of RBIs to lead the Mallards. Tate Matheny (Missouri State), John LaPrise (Virginia), McCarthy, Reuvekamp and Forgione all finished with at least two hits for the Mallards. Designated hitter Bre' Kimbell (Louisiana Tech) hit his second home run of the season and knocked in two runs.

The Mallards first game against the Loggers will start at 7:05 pm Tuesday night while Wednesday's game also begins at 7:05 pm.

July 3rd is the West Bend Home Talent Classic featuring Paul Molitor at the "Duck Pond." The Rhythm and Booms Fireworks show will also take place after the game. The American Cancer Society Community Connection Night is also that day.

The Madison Mallards are part of the 16-team Northwoods League. The Northwoods League has more teams, plays more games, and draws more fans than any other Summer Collegiate Baseball League in North America. In 2013, the Northwoods League is celebrating its 20th season.
