Rochester Honkers News Release
(Rochester, MN) - The Rochester Honkers ended an eight-game road trip with a 6-3 loss to the Willmar Stingers on Monday July 1 at Bill Taunton Stadium in Willmar, MN.
Alex Greer (Iowa Western) started the scoring as he led off the top of the second inning with a homerun. The homerun was the eighth of the season for Greer - who now leads the Northwoods League in homeruns. The Honkers held a 1-0 lead after an inning and a half. Greer finished the game going 2-for-4.
After holding the Stingers scoreless for the first four innings, Honkers starting pitcher Matt Kent (Texas A&M) surrendered three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Tyler Leffler's two-run homerun with two outs put the Stingers ahead 3-1.
Marc Flores led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a double to knock Kent out of the game. Zach Tillery welcomed relief pitcher Mason Pingel (Western Illinois) with a RBI single to score Flores. Tillery would later steal second base and score on a double from Danny Brennan to give Willmar a 5-1 lead after six innings.
Jared Deacon (Cal State Fullerton) reached on a walk to start the top half of the seventh inning and later scored on a single from Kalei Hanawahine (Hawaii.) Carter Burgess (Sam Houston State) followed with a RBI double to score Hanawahine and cut the Willmar lead to two runs at 5-3. Burgess and Hanawahine each picked up a pair of hits and a RBI on the night. Burgess has now hit safely in all 20 games he has played in this season.
Flores delivered a second double of the game to score Leffler and give the Stingers an insurance run in the bottom half of the seventh inning. The run was charged to Pingel, who allowed two runs on four hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Kent took the loss (2-1) for the Honkers, as he allowed four runs, just one earned, on four hits in five innings of work. Andrew Woeck earned the win (1-0) for Willmar. He allowed three runs on seven hits in seven innings. Reid Roper (Illinois) retired all five batters that he faced in relief, while recording four strikeouts.
Rochester (17-16) will now return home for a pair of games with the St. Cloud Rox to wrap up the first half of the season. The series begins on Tuesday July 2 at 7:05 p.m. at Mayo Field. Derrick Hadley (Sam Houston State) is slated to make the start for the Honkers, while Kyle Davis (Colorado Mesa) is scheduled to start for the Rox.
