Quad City Mallards News Release
QUACK TRACKS
Streak Stopped
Yesterday's loss in Bloomington halted the Mallards' three-game winning streak. The Mallards scored just once against the Blaze after exploding for nine goals one night earlier against Dayton.
Tough at the Top
The Mallards are embarking on a stretch of seven straight games against four clubs- Evansville, Fort Wayne, Missouri and Berry Conference leader Wichita- that all currently hold playoff positions and that are all at least six games over .500. This week the Mallards will twice battle the team with whom they are tied for second place in the Turner Conference- Evansville- before clashing with Turner Conference leader Fort Wayne Sunday.
Cloud 9 The Mallards last Saturday night against Dayton established a league season high by scoring nine goals. That game also marked the first time Quad City has scored nine times in a game since the United Hockey League Mallards routed the Flint Generals 9-3 on February 2, 2007. The Mallards also set a CHL season high by scoring five goals in the third period last Saturday.
10K
The largest crowd to attend a Mallard home game since March 20, 2010- 5,874- watched the Flock defeat Dayton last Friday evening. One night later, 4,521 fans saw the Mallards complete a two-game sweep of the Gems, to bring to 10,395 the number of spectators who saw the Mallards in action over consecutive nights at the i wireless Center last weekend. This marks the first time a Quad City hockey team has drawn better than 10,000 fans over back-to-back nights since more than 10,000 came out on October 6 and 7, 2007 to watch the American Hockey League's Quad City Flames over their inaugural opening weekend.
Home Cooking
The Mallards have won seven straight home games and lost just once in regulation (9-1-1) in their last 11 home tilts.
On the Road The Mallards have dropped three straight road games. The Flock has gone 2-4-0 in its last six away contests after going 8-4-0 in its first dozen road outings.
Firepower The Mallards, who scored 21 goals while winning three straight games before falling yesterday, now lead the league in goals (130).
Double Down The Mallards have scored twice as many special teams goals as they have allowed. Quad City has produced 48 special teams goals (a league-high 41 on the power play and seven shorthanded) and have given up 24 (all on the power play). The Mallards rank third in the CHL in power play efficiency (22.7 percent).
Best Shot The Mallards remain the league leaders in shots on goal (37.4 per game) despite failing to meet their season average for shots in each of their three games last weekend.
Fantastic Five Five Mallards- Brandon Marino (50 points in 35 games), Eric Giosa (47 in 35), Jared Brown (37 in 35), Justin Chwedoruk (32 in 32) and John Snowden (28 in 27)- are averaging at least a point per game this season. No other club can boast as many players averaging at least a point per contest.
Little Big Man Marino's (24-26-50) 13-game point scoring streak ended yesterday at Bloomington. That streak was the second longest in the league this season. Marino remains the league leader in goals, points and power play goals (9). Last Wednesday he earned CHL All-Star Game Most Valuable Player honors by scoring the winning goal and adding three assists in the All-Stars' 6-4 win over host Arizona.
G-Man Giosa (17-30-47) is now tied for third the CHL in assists, tied for fourth in points and tied for sixth in goals after recording points in each of his last six games (5-9-14). Giosa notched at least two points in each of five straight games before scoring the Mallards' only goal yesterday.
Milestone
Chwedoruk, who earlier this season scored his one hundredth professional goal, has now played 397 career games and is on course to play his four hundredth game when the Mallards host the Komets- one of Chwedoruk's former clubs- Sunday.
Firsts
Defenseman Matt Duffy picked up an assist in his Mallard debut last Saturday (and notched another assist yesterday in his second game).
Head-to-Head
In their only prior meeting with the IceMen, the Mallards fell 5-2 on January 3 in Evansville. The Mallards won their first match-up of the season with the Komets 3-2 in Fort Wayne on November 6 before dropping back-to-back decisions to the Komets on November 19 and 25.
Ins and Outs
