MOLINE, IL - Anthony Perdicaro converted two penalty shots after scoring the second of the Quad City Mallards' two shorthanded tying goals in the third period- Mickey Lang provided the other before assisting on Perdicaro's equalizer- as Mallards scored a wild 4-3 shootout win over the host Denver Cutthroats Friday night. With the dramatic victory, the Mallards improved to .500 (22-22-6), reached 50 points for the season and pulled within one point of the idle Arizona Sundogs in the race for the final Central Hockey League playoff spot.

Perdicaro scored in round three of the shootout before delivering the winner in round 11 after Luke Fulghum had kept the Cutthroats alive by converting Denver's fifth and final regulation shootout opportunity.

That the Mallards even forced overtime and, as it proved, the shootout was remarkable. The Cutthroats entered the third period leading 2-1 only for Lang to even the score shorthanded by finishing off a 2-on-1 rush at 5:21 of the third. Troy Schwab put Denver back on top with drive from the right wing circle on a 3-on-1 at the 9:54 mark, but the Mallards would shock the Cutthroats with another shorthanded goal just under three minutes later. The Mallards were in the midst of a five-minute disadvantage resulting from a major penalty and game misconduct assessed to Bob Preece when Perdicaro rifled in a Lang feed from the right wing circle to know the score at three at 12:44.

Denver had first forged in front with a pair of second period goals. Jeff Neitenbach opened the scoring from the left wing circle at 1:43 of the second and Gabe Gauthier buried the puck from the slot at 9:26 to double the advantage. Mike Stinziani pounce on a rebound to cut the gap to 2-1 at 11:15 and set the stage for the later fireworks.

The Mallards and Cutthroats meet again tomorrow night at 8:05 p.m. in Denver. The Mallards next play at home Sunday, March 3 at 4:05 p.m. against the Fort Worth Brahmas.
