Quad City Mallards News Release
DENVER, CO - Mikael Bedard scored twice, Troy Schwab provided a goal and an assist and Kieran Millan made 35 saves as the host Denver Cutthroats defeated the Quad City Mallards 5-2 Saturday night.
The Cutthroats took control with a pair of second period goals. Schwab fired in a rebound to stretch what had been a 2-1 Denver lead to two goals at 8:12 of the second. With just 38 seconds left in the period, Bedard's power play one timer from the right wing circle made it 4-1 and led to Mallard starting goaltender John Murray being replaced by Neil Conway at the start of the third period.
Matt Duffy cut the Denver lead to 4-2 with a blast from the slot at 2:22 of the third, but Millan would stop 14 Mallard shots in the final frame to set the stage for Bedard's clinching breakaway goal with just under two and a half minutes remaining.
The Cutthroats produced a sign of things to come by jumping out to an early 2-0 lead. Phil Tesoriero scored the game's first goal by sweeping Schwab's centering pass home at 3:59 of the first period. Ben Wilson tipped in the second Denver goal at 12:53.
The Mallards cut the gap to 2-1 when Obi Aduba batted the puck home out of mid-air from the doorstep with just 1:24 left in the first, but Quad City would get no closer.
