Madison Mallards News Release
BATTLE CREEK, MI - The Madison Mallards head back to C.O. Brown Stadium in Battle Creek Sunday looking to get even with the Battle Creek Bombers after losing 2-1 Saturday night. Pitching continues to be a strong asset for the Mallards, who come into Sunday afternoons' contest ranked fourth in the Northwoods League with a 2.66 team ERA.
"What else can I say about the job our pitchers have done? They are a great group of guys that go out there and give everything that they can," said Mallards' field manager Greg Labbe. The team is also fourth in overall batting average, despite struggling to score runs as of late and tallying only four hits on Saturday.
"It's all about consistency at the pate," said Labbe. "We are capable of scoring so many runs. The team needs to keep a high level of intensity throughout the game. I know it's a grind, but if we change a few things that we do, we'll be okay."
The Mallards will throw Tom Windle (Minnesota) in game two of the three-game set today. Windle (0-1) had a rough start at La Crosse exactly one week ago, going only three innings and allowing five runs, taking the loss.
On the other hand, the Bombers, who look to start a modest winning streak Sunday, will counter with Matt Dearden (Indiana). Dearden (1-1) lost his last decision against Green Bay after winning his first start against Waterloo. This season, Dearden has a 5.06 ERA in 10.2 innings pitched. He also has seven walks and five strikeouts. Game time is 4:05 p.m.
The Madison Mallards are members of the 16-team summer collegiate Northwoods League. Great seats remain for all games!
