Mallards Look to Avoid Sweep at Wisconsin Rapids

July 11, 2011 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Madison Mallards News Release

MADISON, WI - July 11, 2011. The Madison Mallards will travel to Wisconsin Rapids to take on the Rafters at 7:05 p.m. at Witter Field Monday. The game will be the finale of a three-game set between the two rivals, and the Mallards will look to salvage the series after dropping the first two games in the series.

Monday's game will be game number five in the second half of the season, and the Mallards will be attempting to win game number two.

The team must get its offense going to generate success. In the past seven games, the Mallards are hitting .253 (56-for-221) with only 27 runs scored (3.9 average) and 48 strikeouts. Once the league's best offense, the Mallards have dropped from first to fourth over the last week. The team has also committed 19 errors and has gone 2-5 in those seven games.

On the mound for Madison will be Nick Sutherland (Minnesota State - Mankato). Sutherland has made twelve appearances, including one start this season. He started in the Mallards' 8-7 loss against Eau Claire on July 5 and left due to a high pitch count after two innings of work. Sutherland is 0-1 this season with an ERA of 4.68 in 25 innings pitched. He has pitched twice against the Rafters this season, going five innings and allowing no runs collectively. The Mallards are 8-4 in games in which Sutherland has pitched.

Paul Schwendel (Emory University) gets the starting nod for Wisconsin Rapids. Schwendel will be making his season debut for the Rafters. This past spring, he went 5-1 in 13 games for the Eagles and notched 63 strikeouts in 67.1 innings pitched.

The Mallards will return to the "Duck Pond" following Monday's game. They will take on the Waterloo Bucks for three games starting Tuesday in their final home stand before the All-Star break. All three games of the series will begin at 7:05 p.m.
