Madison Mallards News Release
MADISON, WI - June 20, 2011. After two thrilling victories over the weekend, the Madison Mallards will head to Waterloo, Iowa to take on the Waterloo Bucks in a three-game series that begins Monday at 6:35 p.m.
The Mallards come into Monday's game with a 6-4 record in their last ten games and sit at 11-7 on the season, tied for first place in the South Division with Green Bay and Eau Claire.
Waterloo is one of the hottest teams in the entire league, winning seven of their last ten and now sit only one-half game out of first.
The Bucks are led by Davis Hendrickson (Illinois), who has a team-high .375 batting average in nine games played. Jeff Popick (Mesa St.) leads the team with four home runs and 15 RBI. As a team, Waterloo is hitting .240.
Looking to cool off the Bucks is Mallards' starter Rusty Shellhorn (Texas Tech). Shellhorn has been a dominant force for Madison this season, going 2-0 through his first three starts. In 17 innings pitched, he has allowed only three earned runs on 15 hits, racking up a total of 21 strikeouts as well. In his start on June 14th, Shellhorn went six innings and struck out eight in the Mallards' 8-4 victory over Eau Claire.
On the hill for the Bucks will be Shane Broyles (Seminole State Community College). Broyles has appeared in two games and has been the winning pitcher in both. One of those appearances was against the Mallards, when he went three innings in relief and struck out six in the team's 4-2 win on June 9th. Overall, Broyles is 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA.
The Mallards will bring the second-best offense in the Northwoods League to Riverfront Stadium. Led by a group of six players hitting over .300, the Ducks seem to have found some potency in their offense over the last two games in which they scored 12 runs on 18 hits.
The upcoming series is the second time these two teams will meet each other this season. Each team won one game in a two-game set that took place at the "Duck Pond" June 9th and 10th.
