WISCONSIN RAPIDS-June 20, 2011-The Wisconsin Woodchucks dropped the first of a three-game series against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters by a score of 5-1, but the biggest loss of the night could be of catcher Carlos Escobar, Jr., who faces a possible suspension after he and Cody Koback instigated an all-out brawl between the two teams.

The Rafters got the scoring started in the second inning on a two-run single by Bart Steponovich that brought in Curtis Frisbie and Josh Cyr.

The Woodchucks got a run of their own in the fifth on a Carlos Escobar, Jr., RBI-single that allowed Mike Gerber to score from third.

However, the Rafters came right back in the bottom of the inning with two additional runs. The first five batters of the inning reached against Woodchuck starter Tyler Nurdin, who was relieved by Justin Burns. Two of the runs scored to give the Rafters a 4-1 lead after Burns did a nice job of getting out of the bases-loaded jam.

Then in the seventh, everything got out of control at Witter Park. The Rafters scored a run on an RBI-single by Brandon Hohl drove in Garret Nash from third base. Cody Koback also tried to score on the play from second, but he was thrown out at home by third-baseman Austin Coleman. Koback collided with Escobar, Jr., at the plate, trying to jar the ball loose, but he was called out. Koback and Escobar, Jr. started shoving each other, and as the two fell to the ground, both benches cleared as punches were thrown and multiple players were ejected. Escobar, Jr., and Koback were both thrown out of the game, along with Burns.

The Woodchucks could not bring any additional runs across as they fell to the Rafters, 5-1. Receiving the win for theRafter was starter, Nestor Bautista, who pitched six innings, allowing seven hits and one unearned run.

Nurdin received the loss after he pitched four innings, allowing seven hits, three earned runs, and three strikeouts.

The Rafters improved to 4-15 on the season, with the Woodchucks falling to 7-10. The two teams will face-off again tomorrow in Wausau before returning to Wisconsin Rapids for the third game of the series, as a rivalry has developed between the two Northwoods League South Division teams.
