Mallards Grab Dramatic Shootout Win in Missouri
March 1, 2013 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release
INDEPENDENCE, MO - Bob Preece converted the deciding penalty shot after Mike Stinziani tied the game late in the third period and the Quad City Mallards defeated the host Missouri Mavericks 3-2 in a shootout Friday night. With the win, the Mallards moved into a tied with the Bloomington Blaze for the eighth and final Central Hockey League playoff spot and improved to .500 (24-24-6, 54 points) on the season.
After the Mallards' Mike Hellyer and the Mavericks' Sebastien Thinel- who had scored twice in the third period to first tie the score and then give Missouri the lead- swapped goals early in the shootout, Preece finally broke the 1-1 deadlock on the Mallards' seventh penalty shot.
Stinziani forced overtime- and, as it would prove, the shootout- by tipping in Darren McMillan's blue line blast with just 1:46 left in regulation. The Mallards found themselves in need of a late equalizer after Thinel scored from close range twice in a minute and 39 seconds, knotting the game at one at the eight minute mark of the third before putting the Mavericks on top for the first time on his very next shift.
Until Thinel broke loose, the Mallards had successfully protected the 1-0 lead provided for them by Anthony Perdicaro, who swooped into the slot to finish off a 2-on-1 rush and open the scoring at 5:58 of the first period.
The Mallards return to action at home Sunday at 4:05 p.m. against the Fort Worth Brahmas. Sunday is Youth Sports Day presented by Quad Cities YMCA. Sunday is also a Mallards Family Skate Day presented by Genesis Health Systems- fans can bring their skates and join the Mallards on the ice after the game. Following the game, fans will also have the chance to spend time with the Mallards themselves, who will join fans at Rascals- located at 1414 15th Street in Moline- for a special post-game event.
