Madison Mallards News Release
Madison, WI - The Mallards returned home to Warner Park and dropped their third straight by a score of 9-7 on Friday night to open a home-and-home set with the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders.
The Dock Spiders struck first in front of a crowd of 6,294 in the 1st inning against Madison starter Kade Lancour. After loading the bases with nobody out, Lancour settled in, only allowing one run to cross the plate. The 1st inning saw five Dock Spiders reach base. Lancour was lights out through the next four frames. He sat down twelve of the next thirteen batters before the 6th inning.
Before the 6th, the Mallards countered with two runs in the 2nd and four runs in the 5th. Scott Shaw smacked a double into the right-field corner which scored both Josh Caron and Michael Latulas (2-3, 2 BB, 2 RBI) in the 2nd inning against Dock Spiders' reliever David Craig (3.1 IP, 3 H, 4 ER) after he entered for Garner Spoljaric. Spoljaric struck out two in the first inning but then exited after throwing warm-up pitches in the 2nd. The Mallards put up a four spot in the 5th courtesy of five walks and two hits. Latulas drove home two runs to stack the lead to five.
Trouble came about in the 6th inning for the Ducks. Lancour started the inning and allowed three of the first four runners to reach. Thomas Ellisen was the first arm in relief for Donnie Scott's crew. Ellisen allowed a single and then a 3-run home run to Anthony Frechette which put the game at a 6-6 tie. Scott handed the ball over to Bryce Woody (3.1, 2 H, 2 BB, 6 K). Woody worked all the way through the 9th inning. Madison evened up the game at seven apiece off a hit-by-pitch from Shaw, two wild pitches, and a passed ball. The Mallards had a prime opportunity in the bottom of the 9th inning after a leadoff single by Javier Beal, who extended his hit streak to five games. Fond du Lac rode Stephen Schissler (3.1 IP, 2 H, 4 K) through the rest of the 9th inning to hit the 10th tied.
Declan Elias entered in the 10th and inherited the extra runner at second. Two walks and a single gave the Dock Spiders a one-run lead. The only error of the game was recorded in the top half of the inning when a pop-up off the bat of Cole Messina was dropped in right-field. The Mallards were unable to score in the bottom half to improve the Dock Spiders best start in franchise history.
The Ducks leave the pond for the second time this week to complete the home-and-home series in Fond du Lac tomorrow. Mallards' coverage can be found on Mixlr (MadisonMallards) at 6:25 PM with first pitch at 6:35 PM.
