Four of the game's five goals were scored in the opening period. The Hounds stretched the lead to 2-0 on a goal by John Spoltore at 7:08 of the opening frame. Sean Starke netted his second goal as a Mallard at 17:02 of the first period. Luke Stauffacher was denied, but Chicago netminder Marty Magers left the rebound for Jesse Rycroft. After denying Rycroft, Magers was unable to make a third save as Starke found the back of the Chicago net. The momentum gained from Starke's goal was quickly snuffed out when Justin Chwedoruk was whistled for boarding at 18:04 of the period. The Hounds converted on the man advantage opportunity as Greg Koehler scored with 0.6 seconds left on the clock. After a scoreless second, Chicago's Todd Grant netted an insurance goal with 6:23 remaining in the third.

The high-scoring defenseman netted his second goal of the night with just 38 seconds left in the first. In the second period, the teams traded 5-on-3 power-play goals. Mike Watt gave the Fury a two-goal edge with his 11th marker of the year while the Mallards were down two men at 10:58 of the second. Sergei Durdin scored at 18:26 of the middle frame while the Mallards were on a 5-on-3 man advantage. Durdin's point shot was deflected high into the air before floating past a stunned Ryan Cyr and into the back of the Fury net. The Latvian-born rearguard's goal cut the Fury's lead to two at 5-3 after two periods. The third period featured a trio of power-play goals. Muskegon's Elias Godoy scored the first one at 2:13 of the final frame which opened up a three-goal Fury advantage. The Mallards battled back to cut the lead to one on power-play goals by Luke Stauffacher at 12:58 and Chad Woollard at 18:19. With just 59 seconds left, Godoy was whistled off for roughing Justin Chwedoruk. Godoy's penalty set up the Mallards 13th power-play, but Quad City could not convert.
