Madison Mallards News Release
MADISON, WI - July 10, 2011. The Madison Mallards fell to the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters for the second night in a row, losing 7-1 Sunday in front of 6,136 fans at the "Duck Pond." The Mallards are a season-low two games under .500 after the loss, and with the win, the Rafters are at the .500 mark for the first time in the team's two-year history.
The game was very competitive early on, as both starting pitchers were lights out through the first four innings.
The Rafters would set the table in the fifth inning by scoring three runs on four hits and two errors. Garrett Nash (Oregon State) scored the first run of the game on a one-out double by Aaron Mees (Oral Roberts). Mees was followed by Alex Edward (LSU), who connected on a two-run home run down the left field line to give the team a 3-0 lead.
The Rafters would subsequently follow the fifth by scoring one in the sixth, one in the seventh, and two in the eighth to round out their scoring. Overall, the team was led by Edward, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Along with Nash, Bobby Martin scored two runs for the Rafters in the game from the bottom of the order.
Madison would be kept in check by good pitching Sunday. The only run the Mallards scored was in the eighth inning when Michael Handel (Minnesota) scored on a double by Mike McQuillan (Iowa). Handel went 2-for-3 for the Ducks to lead an offense that could only collect six hits. All-Star Nate Theunissen (Central Michigan) also had two hits in a 2-for-4 day at the plate.
Rusty Shellhorn (Texas Tech) had his roughest outing on the mound for the Mallards this season on Sunday. Shellhorn, another All-Star, was tagged with his first loss of the season and now sits at 4-1. He pitched 5.1 innings, giving up four earned runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out six, and also saw his ERA increase to 2.01.
The win went to Wisconsin Rapids starter Brad Douthit (USC). Douthit picked up his third victory of the season and is now 3-3 after pitching seven very strong innings. He gave up no runs on three hits, Like Shellhorn, he walked two and struck out six.
