Making a Difference in the Fight Against Lou Gehrig's Disease

June 9, 2015 - Southern League (SL1)
Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

Jacksonville, FL - On Friday, June 12th, the Jacksonville Suns will join The ALS Association and Minor League Baseball™ in honoring people living with Lou Gehrig's Disease and helping strikeout ALS during the team's home game vs. the Tennessee Smokies at Bragan Field.

"Baseball has had a long tradition of supporting our community and people living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, the disease best known for taking the life of baseball legend Lou Gehrig and which now bears his name," said Suns General Manager Chris Peters "But how many of us know that ALS can strike anyone, no matter their age, race or gender -

The Strikeout Lou Gehrig's Disease game will help raise awareness of ALS. The team also will use this opportunity to promote the National ALS Registry, a nationwide research project that may help scientists learn what causes ALS and ultimately help find a treatment for ALS, which is fatal in an average of just two to five years. Furthermore, military veterans are twice as likely to be diagnosed with ALS as the general public.

The Jacksonville Suns Strikeout Lou Gehrig's Disease will include a number of activities:

* The first 500 fans entering the ballpark will receive camouflage colored ALS Registry foam baseballs. * The Suns will be holding a 50/50 raffle with 50% of the proceeds going to benefit The ALS Association Florida Chapter

"We thought this would be a tremendous opportunity to support those with ALS and help bring greater awareness to this horrible disease," continued Peters.

"The ALS Association is proud to work together with the Jacksonville Suns to let more people know about Lou Gehrig's Disease," said ALS Association President & CEO, Barbara Newhouse. "But what makes this event so special is that it does more than raise awareness; it can help us fight this disease by promoting the ALS Registry. The registry can help us learn why individuals get ALS, and it can help us do something about it. But we need to make sure people know it's there."

The ALS Association is an official Charity Partner of Minor League Baseball™. The mission of The Association is to lead the fight to cure and treat ALS through global cutting-edge research, and to empower people with Lou Gehrig's Disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them with compassionate care and support.
