PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns (26-32) used a strong start from Trevor Williams to defeat the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (22-35) 2-1 Tuesday night from Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.
Suns starter Trevor Williams (W, 3-6) supplied six and two-thirds innings allowing one run (earned) on five hits while walking one and striking out six. Robert Stephenson (L, 3-5) was impressive in his start for Pensacola generating seven frames relinquishing two runs (both earned) on three hits while walking two and striking out eight batters. Juancito Martinez (S, 2) nailed down his second save in as many days after pitching a scoreless ninth.
The scoring would begin in the top of the fourth, when Carlos Lopez led off the frame with a double, which was subsequently followed up Austin Nola getting hit by a pitch. After a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, Ryan Rieger delivered with a RBI groundout scoring Lopez, and leaping the Suns in front 1-0.
Flashing ahead to the bottom of the fifth, and Cam Maron laced a one out double to set up shop in scoring position. Next batter, Beau Amaral, then grounded a run-scoring single into center to score Maron and tie the score at one apiece.
Moving to the top of the sixth, and Kenny Wilson started things off with a single, to then steal second, and use a sacrifice bunt by Lopez to move to third. Viosergy Rosa now at the plate with two outs, supplied a run-scoring double to score Wilson and give Jacksonville a 2-1 edge.
Craig Stem hurled scoreless third of an inning to end the seventh while in relief of Williams. Steve Cishek manufactured a scoreless eighth inning out of the bullpen for the Suns while surrendering a pair of hits.
The Suns can grab their first five-game sweep over an opponent since they won all five games of a series with the Mobile BayBears between August 29th and September 1st.
The Suns and Blue Wahoos will square off in the series finale Wednesday night from Pensacola Bayfront Stadium with a first pitch slated for 7:35 p.m. ET. The Suns starter is yet to be announced while the Wahoos will start right-hander Daniel Wright (2-4, 5.76 ERA).
