Majors Fall Short to Barrie 2-1
December 15, 2011 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
It was a hard fought game, but it still goes into the books as the third straight loss for the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors.
Ivan Telegin scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period and the Barrie Colts held on for a 2-1 win over the Majors in Ontario Hockey League play Thursday night at the Molson Centre in Barrie.
The Majors battled hard all night against the Colts, who moved to within a point of first place in the Eastern Conference with the win, but Mississauga (14-14-1-3) lost another close game to remain in eighth place in the East.
"For the most part I think we played pretty well, but we just couldn't take advantage of any of our chances against their goalie late in the game," Mississauga General Manager/Coach James Boyd said. "They scored a goal on the power play and we didn't, and so often that's the difference in the hockey game."
Eric Locke had the other goal and Zach Hall added a pair of assists for Barrie, as goalie Clint Windsor made 24 saves. Jamie Wise scored the lone goal for the Majors, with JP Anderson making 29 saves as the Colts out-shot the Majors 31-25.
Boyd feels his team can pick up some positives from the loss.
"This is always a tough place to play, but it's frustrating when you come so close and don't have anything to show for it," Boyd said. "But there are definitely some positives to build on and we have two home games coming up, so hopefully we can start picking up some points here."
After a scoreless first period, the Colts opened the scoring on the powerplay as Locke beat Anderson at 1:37 to give the Colts a 1-0 lead assisted by Hall and Telegin.
Just two and a half minutes later the Majors tied the game, as Jamie Wise notched his ninth goal of the season, unassisted, at 4:07.
Telegin once again gave the Colts the lead with just 1:34 remaining in the middle frame scoring his 12th of the season from Hall and Aaron Ekblad at 18:36 to make it 2-1, which proved to be the game winner.
Shots favored the Colts all night, as they led the Majors 12-11 in that category after one, 24-20 after two, and finished with a game total 31-25 despite missing impact players Mark Scheifele and Tanner Pearson due to the World Junior Championship.
Anderson made 29 saves despite being handed the loss, while Clint Windsor allowed just one goal on 25 shots he faced.
The Barrie power play went 1-for-5, while the Majors were unsuccessful converting on their three chances with the man advantage.
The Majors won't need to wait long to try to get back into the win column as they host the Kingston Frontenacs on Friday night at the Hershey Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Friday night is also Teddy Bear Toss night, so be sure to bring along a stuffed toy to throw onto the ice following the Majors first goal of the game. Stuffed bears will also be available for purchase on the concourse of the arena before and during the game, supplied by game sponsor Canadian Tire, with proceeds of sales going to Sleeping Children Around the World, and the bears being donated to Big Brothers and Sisters of Peel Region.
The Majors close out the weekend and their pre-holiday schedule when they host the Sudbury Wolves on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Hershey Centre. Tickets for both games are available online at www.ticketmaster,ca, by calling (905) 502-7788, or by visiting the Hershey Centre box office.
Mississauga returns to action after the holidays on Wednesday, December 28th when they travel to Guelph to take on the Storm at 7 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre, and play their first game back home on Friday, December 30th when they host the Niagara IceDogs at 7:30 p.m.
