Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

A big weekend for the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors didn't get off on the right foot on Thursday night in St. Catharines.

The Niagara IceDogs handed the Majors their first road shutout of the year, dropping the Majors 3-0 in front of 2,926 fans at the Gatorade Garden City Complex in Ontario Hockey League play.

It was just the second time the Majors have been shut out this season, and only the third time the Majors didn't manage to muster a point in 12 games on the road this season.

After a scoreless first period, Billy Jenkins put the IceDogs on the board with 46 seconds left in the second period from Milan Doudera to give Niagara a 1-0 lead at 19:14. The IceDogs outshot the Majors 9-6 in the first frame, followed by a 12-7 margin in the second period.

Dougie Hamilton gave the IceDogs a 2-0 lead 48 seconds into the third period, assisted by David Pacan. Alex Friesen topped off the scoring with a powerplay goal with 12 seconds left to play from Andrew Agozzino and Pacan at 19:48 to give the IceDogs the 3-0 win.

Despite the loss, Majors General Manager/Head Coach James Boyd was pleased with his goaltending against a tough divisional opponent.

"We hung in against a very good team for most of the first two periods, but just couldn't compete for the whole 60 minutes," Boyd said. "JP held us in but we couldn't find a way to beat Visentin and couldn't capitalize on the power play."

JP Anderson certainly held up his end of the bargain, making 41 saves despite the loss. Mark Visentin stopped all 24 shots he faced for his third shutout of the season. Final shots were 44-24 in favour of the IceDogs.

The powerplay was plentiful for the Majors with six opportunities, but didn't manage to capitalize. The IceDogs, however, were also handed six chances with the man advantage, in which they converted on their final chance in the final minute of play.

The Majors now sit 5th in the Eastern Conference with a 11-7-1-3 record, but with 26 points, trail the conference and division leading Brampton Battalion by just one point.

The Majors continue their road swing on Friday when they travel to Sudbury to take on the Wolves at 7:35 p.m., followed by a 7:05 p.m. contest with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds at the Essar Centre on Sunday night. They return home on Wednesday, November 23rd when they host the Brampton Battalion for their annual School Day Game at the Hershey Centre at 11 a.m. Tickets are still available for purchase at www.ticketmaster.com or at the Hershey Centre box office.
