June 26, 2014 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Sanford Mainers News Release

The Mainers (8-7) have a gem in Rich Vrana (2-0) the 6'2 205 pound senior from Marist College has found a way to lower his already microscopic ERA of 0.79 to 0.50. Vrana completed 6.1 innings allowing just 5 hits while not walking a batter and recording 5 strikeouts as the Moose have won 4 in a row by the final of 4-1 over the Laconia Muskrats (6-9).

Sanford wasted zero time getting on the board in the bottom of the first, Nick Lovullo doubled over Drake Parker to third after Parker reached via a walk, Matt Harris grounded out to second but Parker sprinted home for the first run. The next batter Stevie Berman slammed a single to left field driving in Lovullo putting the Mainers up 2-0 and that lead held, or to be correct was held by the Mainers bullpen.

Jon Chudy replaced Vrana in the 7 th and did not allow a hit and struck out one batter dropping his ERA to 1.59. Cody Dube was called on to finish the last part of the 8 th inning and did so recording the final two outs. Cam Hatch was called on in the 9 th and worked a 2 hit inning surrendering one run but completing the save.

Laconia had trouble getting on the board despite 7 hits, Vinny Zarrillo finished 2 for 4 and scored on Colton Bottomley's RBI sac fly in the top of the ninth against Hatch, but Hatch recorded the final out on a ground out to Cory Raley at short. The loss is credited to Shea Spitzbarth (0-2, 2.32 ERA) who completed 5.2 innings allowed 2 earned runs on 5 hits while walking2 and retiring 5 via the strikeout. Max Herrmann worked 2 innings in relief allowed 2 earned runs as his ERA balloons to 6.35. A speedy 2 hr 23 pitcher's duel delighted Mainers fans as Mike Rescigno finished 1 for 3, Caden Bailey went 1 for 4, Matt Pagano completed a 2 for 4 day with 1 RBI.

The Mainers hit the road for the weekend to face Vermont (9-6) tomorrow first pitch at 6:30 pm inside Montpelier Recreational Field, then the rivalry is renewed at Robbie Mills Field Saturday between the Mainers and Laconia 6:30 pm, and Sunday the Moose continue their road trip at Joe Wolfe Field in North Adams with first pitch at 4:30 pm.
