Keene, N.H. - The Vermont Mountaineers fell to the Keene Swamp Bats 6-5 at Alumni Field in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action on Thursday night. With the loss, Vermont falls to 9-6 on the season.
The Mountaineers led from the first inning until the bottom of the eighth, when they saw their 5-2 lead evaporate. Keene third baseman, Patrick McGrath (Washington State) led off the inning with a single. Number nine batter and catcher Connor Fitzsimons (Central Connecticut State) reached after being hit by a pitch from Vermont reliever Dalton Goss (Alabama-Huntsville) to set up first and second with no outs. Two batters later, Brady Sheetz (Hartford) walked to load the bases with two outs. Manager Joe Brown (Cortland) called on Sam Spencer (Castleton) in place of Goss. The reliever got the first batter he faced, Zach Lauricella (St. John's), to pop up behind home plate. Mountaineers' catcher Josh Treff (Northeastern) could not come up with a tough catch to retire the side. Lauricella laced an RBI single to center cut the deficit to 5-3, before Jared Mederos (St. John's) hit a two RBI double to left field to tie the game at five. Lauricella moved up to third base, representing the go ahead run. Lauricella scored on a passed ball to give Keene a 6-5 lead, one they would go on to hold.
