Sanford Mainers News Release

SANFORD, Maine - The Sanford Mainers played a home doubleheader on Sunday at Goodall Park against the North Shore Navigators. In the opener, North Shore used eight unanswered to win 8-3. Sanford took the nightcap in a last inning comeback and a walk-off walk to win 4-3.

In game one, Joe Joe Rodriguez (St. John's) made the start and only gave up one hit. In three innings, Rodriguez gave up three earned runs, walked three and struck out four in the losing decision.

Sanford got on the board first in the third inning with back to back RBI singles by Freddy Rojas Jr. (UT-Rio Grande Valley) and Dom Freeberger (UNC-Asheville) to take a 2-0 lead.

North Shore ripped through the middle of the game to take an 8-2 lead, and Sanford could only get one more run in the seventh inning on a Mitch Moralez (Utah Valley) sacrifice fly that brought Derek Smith (Bryant) in to score in a 8-3 loss.

In the second game, Trevor LaBonte (Maryland) took the spot start and only gave up two runs in just over four innings. Jacob Edwards (UNC-Asheville) and Gavin Hinchliffe (Delaware) combined for no-hit shutouts in relief to hold the deficit at two.

Sanford put together a comeback in the seventh inning down 3-0, which was fueled by three hits and walks. The inning started with Smith knocking a pinch hit single to lead things off, part of four hits he had in the doubleheader. After an Ubaldo Lopez (Georgetown) walk, Jonny Barditch (Utah) singled to load the bases.

Cal Hewett (Vanderbilt) reached on an error that brought in the opening run. Moralez made it a one run game on the next batter with an RBI single. Dayne Leonard (West Virginia) drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game, and Rojas Jr. walked to bring in the game-winning run in a 4-3 comeback win.

The Sanford Mainers hit the road for four straight games this week, starting in North Adams on Monday.
