Sanford Mainers News Release
SANFORD, ME - It took 10 innings and a Chris Gaetano moonshot to right field to decide the outcome, but the Sanford Mainers (3-1) took their home opener by a score of 2-1.
Gaetano (Monmouth) took the first offering he saw from Vermont (1-3) reliever Sean Callahan (UMass Dartmouth) and belted it to right field, a no-doubter which cleared the fence and the trees beyond the field. Gaetano entered the game as a defensive replacement in the 8th, and hit the game-winning homerun in his first at-bat on the contest.
The Mainers got to the 10th on the back of superb pitching. Sanford starter Ben Wessel (Rhode Island) went six innings, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out four in the no decision. Wessel's school teammate Blaise Whitman (Rhode Island) made an instant impact for Mainers on his first day with club, earning the win.
Whitman entered the game in the 9th, with the tying run at third base and the score tied 1-1. Whitman made mincemeat of the first batter he faced, as he struck out swinging and then proceeded to get the next man on a routine groundout to shortstop. Whitman would also throw a scoreless 10th.
Sanford set the pace when they grabbed the first run of the ballgame in the 1st inning. C.J. Krowiak (Binghamton) reached as the leadoff man on an infield error, as did Ako Thomas (Michigan). After a passed ball put Krowiak on third base, Zach Jancarski (Maryland College Park) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score the first run of the game.
The defending NECBL Champion Mountaineers dominated from the hill as well. Starter Joe Jacques (Manhattan) went the first five innings and allowed just three hits, a walk and an unearned run.
The Sanford Mainers return to action June 14 at 6:30 PM when they travel to North Adams, Massachusetts to take on the North Adams SteepleCats. The game broadcast can be found on the NECBL Broadcast Network and The Legends in Sanford, 1220 AM 102.3 FM.
