Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers led for the first five innings of play on Tuesday night, but couldn't hold on, as they fell to the Winnipeasaukee Muskrats 8-5 in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action.
A big eighth inning for Winnipeasaukee made the difference, as they scored three runs in the inning to take the lead away from Vermont. Griffin Helms (Dulduth, Ga./Kennseaw) singled to start it off, and Logan McRae (Florence, S.C./Charleston) followed that with a walk. Anthony Pagano (Humble, Texas/Texas St.) then bunted the two over. After an intentional walk to Jonathan Ortega Victoria, Texas/Texas St.), who already had two hits in the game to that point, Jimmy Galusky (Arthurdale, W.Va./West Virginia) ripped an RBI-double, driving in all three runners.
Mountaineers starter Jon Stiever (Cedarburg, Wis./Indiana) pitched five innings, allowing one run on four hits. It's the second game that Stiever has pitched well in, but gotten a no-decision. Winnipeasaukee hurler Denis Lyman (Kingston, N.Y./Bridgeport) struggled, going just two and two thirds innings, allowing four runs on five hits, and walking four batters.
The Mountaineers struck early, tacking on two runs in the first and another pair in the second, but it wasn't enough. A single, a walk, and a hit batsman loaded the bases for the Mountaineers in the first, setting left fielder Troy Scocca (Syosset, N.Y./Fairfield) up to knock an RBI single that scored a pair of runs.
Winnipeasaukee responded the next inning with a run of their own, to cut the Mountaineers lead in half. Anthony Godino (Thornwood, N.Y./Wagner) got them started with a leadoff walk, and he was driven in a by a one-out triple by Griffin Helms (Dulduth, Ga./Kennseaw).
Vermont added another two in the third thanks to an RBI single by Ryan Fineman (Bloomington, Ind./Indiana), that drove in Mikael Mogues (New York, N.Y./Seton Hall). Fineman was later scored after being walked in.
After getting one more run in the fourth thanks to a sac fly by Mike Osinski, that was all Vermont could muster offensively. They had just six hits from the fifth inning on.
Ethan Gillis (Senoia, Ga./Kennesaw St.) got the win for the Muskrats, pitching three innings, and allowing no runs on four hits. Morgan Maguier (Rumson, N.J./Old Dominion) suffered the loss for Vermont, after allowing four runs on five hits over three innings of work.
Vermont will be on the road tomorrow, as they travel to Danbury to take on the Westerners. Joey Benitez (Crofton, Md./Old Dominion) is scheduled to start. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 AM WSKI, or online.
