Mainers Top Muskrats In Make Up, Lose Later In Lynn

Sanford Mainers News Release


Lynn, MA - The Sanford Mainers defeated the Laconia Muskrats by the final tally of 1-0 on Monday, playing the final four innings of a delayed game from July 29. The win improves Sanford to 20-21 on the season and clinched third place in the NECBL's Eastern Division.

The game was resumed in the top of the fourth with no score for either team. In the bottom of the sixth the Mainers Eric Hailer singled and advanced to second on a Justin Leisenheimer sacrifice bunt. Mike Montville singled to score Hailer and make it 1-0 Sanford. Tyler Mizenko allowed one hit in the top of the seventh, but kept the Muskrats off the board for the save.

The win guaranteed the Mainers third place in the NECNL's Eastern Division, meaning they will take on the North Shore Navigators in the first round of the playoff, with the first game taking place in Lynn, Massachusetts on Wednesday. Game two will be in Sanford at 6:30 on Thursday.

 

In the second game of the day the Mainers lost 6-3 in Lynn against the North Shore Navigators. The loss solidifies Sanford in third place for the playoffs at 20-22. The Mainers will play North Shore in the first round starting Wednesday, with game one taking place in Lynn.

The Navigators scored the first runs of the game in the third. Matt Boulter was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a Cody Dent ground out. Saulyer Saxon singled him home for the first run of the game. Matt McGovern was hit by a pitch before a wild pitch moved both runners up, putting them on second and third. Eric Jagielo hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Saxon and make it 2-0 Navigators.

In the fourth North Shore added to their lead. Eric Williams was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A ground out to second moved Williams up to third before Boulter singled to make it 3-0 North Shore.

The Navigators added two more in the sixth. Conner Mach singled and advanced to second when Williams was hit by a pitch. Boulter singled to score Mach and put Williams on third before Dent singled to score him and make it 5-0 North Shore.

Sanford got on the board for the first time in the eighth. Nick LaCroix singled and advanced to second on a Jack Lupo single. Justin Leisenheimer doubled to score both runners and make it a 5-2 game. Mike Montville was hit by a pitch and Pat Devlin reached on an error to load the bases. Paul Kronenfeld hit into a fielder's choice to score Leisenheimer and make it 5-3.

North shore scored a run of their own in the bottom of the eighth before Miles Landry came in to shut down the Mainers in the ninth for a 6-3 Navigator victory.

Notes: Balentina got his first win of the season in a relief effort in the first game. Kronenfeld increased his league-leading walk total to 36 by drawing a walk against Laconia. Montville increased his team lead in RBI to 20 with the game-winner against Laconia. Matt Verrier was the only Mainer to reach base twice against the Muskrats, drawing two walks. Three Mainers had two hits against North Shore. Neither team stole a base in the second game. Seven combined batters were hit by pitches at North Shore. Both teams left nine batters on base in game two. AJ Bazdanes is scheduled to start the next game for Sanford, 6:15 Wednesday in Lynn, Mass., against the North Shore Navigators.
