Keene Swamp Bats News Release
NORTH ADAMS, MA - Right-hander Brad Monroe (Hampton, NH/Southern NH) did not allow a hit until the bottom of the seventh inning to guide the Keene Swamp Bats past the North Adams SteepleCats, 6-1, in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action on Monday night at Joe Wolfe Field.
Keene improves to 27-14 overall. North Adams' season ends at 13-29.
Monroe pushed his record to 4-3 on the season allowing just one hit on seven innings of work, two walks and five strikeouts. Jacob Daniel (Russellville, AL/Eastern Kentucky) broke up Monroe's no-hit bid in the seventh inning with one out on a line drive single to right field. Monroe's chance at a perfect game ended quickly in the contest as he walked Drew Gadaire (Gainesville, FL/Davidson) to leadoff the second.
Cameron Copping (Temple City, CA/Buffalo) suffered the loss (2-3) on six innings pitched, six runs (four earned), 10 hits, no walks and two punchouts.
In the top of the second inning, Tom Conley (Quincy, MA/UMass-Amherst) gave Keene an early 1-0 lead with an RBI double down the right field line scoring Esteban Gomez (Brooklyn, NY/San Jacinto) who notched one of his three singles on the night with one out in the frame. Curt Powell (Knoxville, TN/Georgia) followed and ripped a two-run single through the right side of the infield for a 3-0 advantage.
The Swamp Bats added another run in the third inning as Michael Burruss (Marietta, GA/Georgia Southern) deposited an RBI single into left centerfield plating teammate Kevin Brown (Northborough, MA/Bryant) for a 4-0 gap.
In the fifth, Gomez and Burruss pushed Keene ahead 6-0 with back-to-back RBI base knocks driving home Brett DeLoach (Blackshear, GA/Georgia) and Colby May (Guyton, GA/Georgia), respectively.
Monroe faced the minimum through six innings until Daniel spoiled the possibility of a no-hitter in the seventh. The right-hander walked Chantz Mack (Homestead, FL/Miami) to leadoff the inning and induced Mike LeBel (Quincy, MA/URI) into a fly out to right field before Daniel's base hit. Monroe kept the SteepleCats scoreless in the inning as Gadaire flew out to centerfield and Mack ran North Adams out of the frame trying to score from the backdoor off a pickoff attempt, 1-3-4-2.
The SteepleCats broke up the shutout in the bottom of the ninth as pinch-hitter Brent Hopkins (Cranston, RI/RIC) laced a single to right field bringing home LeBel from second base.
Keene returns to action tomorrow at home versus the Vermont Mountaineers with first scheduled for 6:30 pm.
