NECBL New England Collegiate Baseball League

Blue Sox' Eberle; Schooners' Bordonaro Win Player, Pitcher of the Week

Published on August 1, 2011 under New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) News Release

Player of the Week:

Sam Eberle, 3B/RF

Holyoke Blue Sox

Junior

Chattanooga, TN

Jacksonville State

If Eberle drove in runs all summer at the pace he did this week, he would have shattered the NECBL's season RBI record on the 14th game of the summer. Eberle drove in 15 Blue Sox for the week; three times in five games he drove in at least three. The third baseman also homered twice and doubled twice en route to hitting .500 (9-for-18) on the week. Eberle missed winning Jacksonville State's Triple Crown this spring by just two home runs.

Other superlatives for the week include:

It was a Blue Sox kind of week. Holyoke C/DH Tom Murphy (sophomore/Buffalo) clobbered four home runs, all of them coming over three consecutive days. He homered in road wins at Laconia and North Adams, then homered twice at home against Danbury on July 26th.

Holyoke 3B Eric Smith (junior/Stanford) put together a .571 on base percentage. Smith hit .471 (8-for-17) and walked three times while striking out just once. He reached base in every Blue Sox game this week.

OF Brian O'Grady (freshman/Vermont/Rutgers) stole seven bases to lead the NECBL this week. O'Grady epitomized Vermont's league leading larceny by swiping three bags on July 26th against North Adams

Pitcher of the Week:

Mark Bordonaro, RHP

Freshman

Mystic Schooners

Berlin, CT

Fairfield University

Bordonaro threw four innings of shutout ball and allowed just one base runner in Mystic's July 24th win over Danbury. Bordonaro got the win and struck out six. As a reliever on a sub-.500 team, it could be easy to overlook the summer that the flame throwing freshman is having. But Bordonaro has a 1.78 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 25.1 innings of work. His WHIP is a scant .83. He led the Stags in appearances this spring.

Other superlatives for the week include:

RHP Trent Frazango (junior/Georgia Southwestern/North Adams) and LHP Vincent DePierro (junior/UMass Lowell/Sanford) both struck out eleven this week. In five innings of work on July 24th, Frazango struck out four Holyoke Blue Sox and didn't allow an earned run. He fanned seven Danbury Westerners five nights later. DePierro struck out 11 and got the victory in a 10-3 win over Old Orchard Beach on June 25th.

LHP Greg Terhune (sophomore/Seton Hall/New Bedford) threw the most innings- nine- without allowing an earned run. In his complete game 4-3 win over Sanford on July 24th, the 6'5" Terhune went the distance and struck out two. ~~~~~
