Sanford Mainers News Release
SANFORD, Me - Take what the defense gives you.
The Mainers did that in their win over Upper Valley on Wednesday night, 5-4. While Sanford committed five errors, the lone one for the Nighthawks was the biggest miscue and prompted a four-run fourth inning.
Upper Valley struck in the first two innings to take an early two-run lead.
In the first, Nicholas Wang (Boston College) drove in Max Grant (Canisius) on a single, 1-0.
Jump to the second, where Adarius Myers (Louisiana Tech) notched his third RBI in four games as he brought in Clay Stearns (Troy), 2-0.
Heading into the bottom of the fourth, the Mainers had committed three errors, but an Upper Valley mistake turned the tide.
MJ Lucas (UNC-Asheville) as he pushed Joey Rezek (East Carolina) on a fielder's choice, then Kevin Skagerlind (UMass) had a "Little League home run."
Skagerlind laid down a bunt, and the throw from the pitcher Austin Wainer (Bryant) went wayward and down the right field, allowing Lucas, Devan Bade (Binghamton) and Skagerlind all to score, 4-2.
The two traded runs in the seventh, first a double from Ryan Ignoffo (Eastern Illinois) scored Grant for the second time. In the bottom half, a bloop single from David Bermudez (Manhattan) brought Cal Hewett (Vanderbilt) home, 5-3.
Upper Valley would cut the lead to one in the eighth as Myers scored on an errant pickoff throw, but Ryan Butler (Liberty) recorded the final four outs to give the Mainers a big win.
The win snaps Sanford's four-game losing skid and puts them at 17-20, eclipsing last year's win total of 16.
The Mainers are back at home tomorrow against the Valley Blue Sox. The first time these two Valley came out on top, 10-9.
Matthew Sapienza (Georgetown) will be on the mound, making his third start of the season.
