Cardines Field in Newport, R.I. - The Marthas Vineyard Sharks (23-14) and Newport Gulls (25-12) each spoiled the other's winning streaks as they split an important Coastal Division doubleheader.
Martha's Vineyard ran their win streak to eight games with their victory in the opener, but Newport, who had their six-game winning streak snapped at the same time, salvaged a split with a come-from-behind win in the nightcap.
Game 1:
The Sharks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first after a Cabot Maher three-run bomb. The Gulls responded quickly in the bottom of the inning, scoring twice thanks to a Joshua Kuroda-Grauer (Rutgers) double and a passed ball. Newport added three more in the second to take a 5-3 lead. A two-run Colton Ledbetter (Mississippi St) double and a Slate Alford (Mississippi St) single put the home team up two. Martha's Vineyard would score the last four runs of game one to claim the 8-5 victory.
Each team had ten hits in the seven-inning affair. Vineyard's Logan Chambers (Tennessee) and Newport's Kolton Freeman (Dartmouth) both went 4-4 with two runs scored. Cabot Maher led the Sharks with four RBIs.
Game 2: Newport used an eight-run sixth inning to take a commanding 12-7 lead. Started by a Kolton Freeman grand slam, the Gulls flipped a three run deficit into a five-run lead. Other RBIs from Noah Martinez (Central Connecticut St) and Spenser Smith (Northeastern) and an error rounded out the Gulls' eight-run inning.
Newport got out to a flying start in the bottom of the first, scoring four runs via a Colton Ledbetter single and a Joshua Kuroda-Grauer two-run bomb. Martha's Vineyard hit back with four runs of its own in the third. A solo shot from Logan Chambers and a three-run homer by Dorian Gonzalez (Miami FL) knotted things at four. The Sharks took a 7-4 lead in the sixth through Danny Crossen (Northeastern) and Thomas Bramley (Penn St) singles. The Gulls respond with eight runs in the bottom of the inning to take back the lead.
Vineyard's Dorian Gonzalez led all players with three hits. Newport's Kolton Freeman drove in four of the Gulls' eventual twelve runs.
The Sharks return home to face the Mountaineers (30-7) today at 7:05 p.m. The Gulls head to Ocean State to play the Waves (19-18) today at 6:30 p.m.
Winnipesaukee vs Vermont (DH)

Vermont Mountaineers 4 - Winnipesaukee Muskrats 3
W - Brendan McFall 6-0 (Tufts) 2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER (1 R), 0 BB, 3 K
L - Adam Maher 1-2 (UMass Dartmouth) 0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
Montpelier Recreation Field in V.T. - The Vermont Mountaineers (30-6) walked off the Winnipesaukee Muskrats (14-20) in game one of the doubleheader for its league leading 30th win of the season.
The Mountaineers got out to an early 2-0 lead after a sac fly from Santino Rosso (Hofstra) and a single from Mark Trotta (William and Mary) in the first. The Muskrats responded with two runs of their own in the third. The runs came on a single from Brendan Concannon (Paris JC) and an RBI groundout from Patrick Roche (Boston College) to tie the game.
After walking in the bottom of the fifth, Evan Fox (Stony Brook) stole second base. The throw got away from the catcher and was misplayed by the centerfielder, causing Fox to come around to score and give Vermont a 3-2 lead. Winnipesaukee stayed in the game when a Sebastian Mueller single in the sixth tied the game back up at three. In the bottom of the seventh, the Mountaineers loaded the bases with two men out. On the first pitch to Rosso, a wild pitch allowed Tom Josten (Central Florida) to score the game winning run and give Vermont a game 1 victory.
Game 2
Winnipesaukee Muskrats 3 - Vermont Mountaineers 2
W - Patrick Harrington 2-0 (Northeastern) 6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K

S - Ryan Qualey 0-1 (UMass Dartmouth) 1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
Montpelier Recreation Field in V.T. - The Winnipesaukee Muskrats (15-20) held off the Vermont Mountaineers (30-7) to salvage a split in the double header.
The Muskrats took a second inning lead after Tyler Grodell's (Mt St Mary's) RBI single plated Grayson Preslar (North Carolina Asheville) to make it 1-0. Winnipesaukee expanded to that lead in the third when All Star Fan Vote candidate Patrick Roche (Boston College) knocked a two run home run to give the Muskrats a 3-0 lead. On the mound, Patrick Harrington kept the Mountaineers off the board for the first five innings of the game. In the sixth, Mark Trotta hit a two out RBI single to make it a 3-1 game. Vermont's rally continued into the seventh as Tyler Cox (Dartmouth) hit into an RBI fielder's choice to make it a 3-2 game. With runners one first and second with one out in the seventh, Ryan Qualey induced a much needed double play ball to shut down the rally and give Winnipesaukee its first win of the season against Vermont.
The Muskrats will return to Robbie Mills Sports Complex to face the Upper Valley Nighthawks Thursday at 6:00 p.m. The Mountaineers, who now sit two wins away from tying the NECBL single season wins record, will head to Martha's Vineyard to take on the Sharks on Thursday at 7:05 p.m.

Goodall Park in Sanford, M.E. - The Sanford Mainers (17-20) edged the Upper Valley Nighthawks (16-20) in a full-team effort.
Upper Valley scored one run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead. Singles from Nicholas Wang (Boston College) and Adarius Myers (Louisiana Tech) put the Nighthawks up early. The Mainers took the lead in the bottom of the fourth through a four-run inning. Three of Sanford's four runs were unearned.
A Ryan Ignoffo (Eastern Illinois) double in the seventh brought Upper Valley within one, but a David Bermudez (Manhattan) single for Sanford in the bottom of the inning restored the Mainers advantage to two. The Nighthawks scored one run off an error in the eighth to cut Sanford's lead to one, but went down quickly in the ninth. Mainers reliever Ryan Butler (Liberty) earned his first save of the season in a five-out appearance.
Seven Sanford players recorded a hit. Upper Valley's Ryan Ignoffo and Clay Stearns (Troy) were the only two players with multi-hit games with two apiece.

Dodd Memorial Stadium, Norwich, Conn. - The Ocean State Waves (19-18) came out on top against the Mystic Schooners (20-16) Wednesday night at Dodd Memorial Stadium.
The Waves piled on early, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning off a Khyree Miller (Winthrop) single, a drawn walk by Blaine Lidsky (Stonehill) with the bases loaded, and an additional RBI by Noah Rivera (Hartford) who drove in a run on a fielder's choice. Another RBI by Miller the next inning increased the Ocean State lead to 4-0.
The Schooners got two runs back in the bottom of the third off a single by Anthony Donofrio (Quinnipiac) to cut the Waves lead to two runs. In the sixth inning, Mason LaPlante (Georgia) hit a two run double and Kevin Ferrar (UCONN) hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth to wrap up scoring for Mystic.
Unfortunately for the Schooners, it wasn't enough, as the Waves tacked on another run in the fifth off an RBI by Drew Holderbach (Marietta) and two in the seventh off a single by Jake Studley (UCONN), who went 5-for-6 on the night, and another RBI double for Holderbach. A series of walks and errors in the ninth inning scored Mystic's eighth and ninth runs, extending the lead and ensuring the win.

Danbury Westerners 7 - Bristol Blues 2

Danbury scored the first six runs of the game, notching a four run fifth inning off the back of an RBI double by Billy Gerlott (Penn St.) and a three run home run by Korey Morton (UCONN), his second homer of the year. Morton drove in another RBI off a sacrifice fly in seventh followed by an RBI double by Alex Stone (Duke). Morton earned his fifth RBI of the game in the top of the ninth with a double to cap off scoring for the Westerners.
The Blues attempted to come back in the eighth with Derek Tenney (Hartford) reaching first and driving in a run on a fielder's choice. Ben Huber (UCONN) then smashed a double to lead off the bottom of the ninth and scored later in the inning on a dropped third strike by the catcher. Unfortunately for Bristol it wasn't enough, and the Blues ultimately came up short.
Both teams return to play on Thursday, July 21st, with the Blues hosting the Mystic Schooners at 6:30 p.m while the Westerners host the North Adams SteepleCats, first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
