
Vermont Suffers Setback to the Sharks

MARTHA'S VINEYARD, Mass. - The Vermont Mountaineers suffered a 13-7 loss to Martha's Vineyard on Thursday night in a cross-divisional NECBL game at the Shark Tank. The Mountaineers drop to 30-8 on the season while the Sharks, who have won eight of their last 10 games, improved to 24-14 on the year.
The Sharks took a 6-0 lead in the first inning. After a groundout to start the game, four straight walks put the first run on the scoreboard. A hit batsman made it 2-0. After Vermont starter Michael Hutchins got the second out via the strikeout, a two-out single by Ben Nardi, made it 4-0 Sharks. A stolen base by Nardi, followed by another two-out single by Cavan Brady made it 6-0.
After being shutout the first two innings by Shark's starter Zachary Clesas, Vermont finally got on the board in the third with a pair of runs. Christian Pregent began the inning with a walk, and moved to second on a passed ball with two outs. Mark Trotta singled in Pregent to make it 6-1. Trotta moved to second on another passed ball before scoring on a single by Santino Rosso to make it 6-2.
Martha's Vineyard responded the following inning with four runs of their own on five hits and an error to make it 10-2.They added three more in the seventh on a three-run blast.
Vermont found offense in the eighth inning. A leadoff double, walk, and single loaded the bases with nobody out. Jack Cone drove in two runs to make it 13-4, before Stephen DiTomaso belted his team-leading fifth home run of the season with two runners on to make it 13-7.
Clesas picked up the win for the Sharks, going five innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a pair of walks. He had two strikeouts. Hutchins suffered the loss for Vermont going just two and two thirds innings, allowing 10 runs on eight hits and five walks. He finished with three strikeouts.
With DiTomaso's three-run blast, he now leads the team with 25 RBI while Cone notched two in the game and now has 14 on the year.
Vermont travels to Lynn, Mass to take on the North Shore Navigators at Fraser Field at 6:35 p.m. You can watch it on the NECBL Broadcast Network.
