Sanford Mainers News Release

HARTFORD, V.T. - After a pair of three-run innings early in the game, the Sanford Mainers (4-4) controlled the contest throughout as they defeated the Upper Valley Nighthawks (4-4), 8-5 Saturday.

The Mainers jumped out to a quick lead in the 2nd. Nelson Mompierre (Miami Dade) walked to open the inning before Todd Czinge (Villanova) homered to make it an early 2-0 lead. Chris Gaetano (Monmouth) stepped in next, hitting his team leading third home run of the year to make it 3-0.

Sanford would add to their lead in the 3rd inning as well. Two quick walks would put men on for Czinge, who promptly singled in a run. Gaetano would knock in two more on a single of his own to make it 6-0, and chase Upper Valley starter Dylan Verdonk (Seton Hall) from the game after just 2 2/3 innings and tag him with the loss.

Will Tribucher (Michigan) got his second six run lead to work with in as many starts, and was solid on the hill throughout. Tribucher went six innings allowed four hits, three walks and three runs, all unearned.

The Nighthawks would get their runs off of Tribucher in the 3 rd inning on a multi-error play. With the bases loaded and a man retired, Joey Denison (Troy) hit a ground ball back to Tribucher, who in an attempt to turn two threw the ball into center field as two runs came across. An errant throw from center field to the infield would bring in an additional run, cutting the lead to 6-3.

Tristan Chari (Vanderbilt) would help with insurance runs in the 8th, as he hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Gaetano. Later in the inning John Cresto (Santa Clara) would score on a wild pitch. The Nighthawks threatened in the 9th, but they could only produce two runs as their rally fell short.

The Mainers produced eight runs on nine hits, more runs (5) then they produced in their last four games combined.

The Mainers return to Sanford Sunday where they will take on the visiting New Bedford Bay Sox in their lone visit to Goodall Park. The pregame show begins at 4:45 PM on the NECBL Broadcast Network with first pitch scheduled for 5 PM.
