Mountaineers Roll Past Muskrats, 5-1

LACONIA, N.H.- A big top of the fifth inning lifted the Vermont Mountaineers over the Winnipesaukee Muskrats, 5-1 on Sunday in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL).

The Mountaineers scored four runs on four hits in the fifth inning. Troy Scocca (Syosset, N.Y./Fairfield) got them going with an RBI-single that drove in catcher Slade Heggen (Missoula, Mo./Oregon), who reached on an error. That was followed by an RBI-double from Joe Tietjen (Waxhaw, N.C./UNC Asheville), an RBI-groundout by Mikael Mogues (New York, N.Y./Seton Hall), and an RBI-single by Mike Osinski (Vestal, N.Y./Longwood). Tietjen and Scocca both later came around to score along with Heggen and second baseman Jeremy Giles (Claremont, Calif./Stony Brook).

The Mountaineers got a solid pitching performance from starter Joe Jacques (Shrewsbury, N.J./Manhattan), who went six innings, allowing one run on five hits.

His counterpart, Austin Geoke (Bordentown, N.J./Wagner), who started for the Muskrats, went three innings, allowing no runs on three hits.

Vermont added another insurance run in the top of the eighth when right fielder Will Morgan ripped an RBI-double that drove in Mogues.

Winnipesaukee's offense came in the top of the fourth, when they scored one run on a pair of hits and an error. Jonathan Ortega got the Muskrats' lone RBI in the contest, when he drove in Anthony Godino (Thornwood, N.Y./Wagner) with a single.

George Lamb (Mesa, Ariz./Ashland) suffered the loss for Winnipesaukee. He pitched one and two thirds innings, and allowed four runs (none earned) on four hits.

Jacques got the win for Vermont.

Vermont improves to 2-7 on the season. The Muskrats drop to 3-6.

The Mountaineers will enjoy a day off on Monday, before facing the Newport Gulls for the first time this season at home on Tuesday evening. First pitch is set for 6:30 at Montpelier Recreation Field.
