Sanford Mainers News Release
Montpelier, VT - For the second straight game the Sanford Mainers matched their opponents in hits, this time getting one more than Vermont, but just couldn't get the runs around and four Moose errors accounting for four runs proved to be the difference on Friday night in Montpelier as they fell by a final of 5-1. As Sanford reaches the halfway point in their season they find themselves struggling a bit as they have now sit in 3rd in the Northern Division with 22 games to play.
Vermont was able to jump on top early as they put up two quick runs in the bottom of the first inning coming off three Sanford errors and two hits to take a 2-0 lead after the 1st.
In the top of the second, the Mainers got their only run of the game as a familiar face in Josh Zbierski (Stafford Springs, Conn./Southern New Hampshire) got his first of three hard hits in his first game back in a Mainers uniform as he knocked in Shane Marshall (Webster, N.Y./Binghamton). Zbierski accounted for almost half of the hits on the night and in the only time he was retired he still hit a hard line drive to centerfield which is one of the positives that the Mainers can take out of the loss.
The other bright spot in the lineup for the Moose was newcomer Austin Lively (Redmond, Wash./Seattle) as he had the only other multi-hit game for Sanford going two-for-three with a double, single and a walk in his debut.
Ed Baram (Saddle Brook, N.J./Adelphi) settled in over the next four innings as he was lights out on the hill for the Mainers going five complete innings with no earned runs only allowing three hits and striking out five.
A tough bottom of the 6th inning for the Mainers is what put the game out of reach for good as Vermont was able to bring around three more runs on three hits and another error to jump out their 5-1 lead, one they would never surrender.
Sean Fisher (Parsonsburg, Md./Maryland) had another impressive appearance on the mound for the Mainers as he came in during that rough bottom of the 6th inning and got out of it unscathed and limiting the Mountaineers to just the three runs. Fisher threw the final 2.2 innings as he allowed only a single hit and struck out three to at least give the Mainers a chance over the final three innings.
Sanford finishes up their week-long road trip tomorrow against a team in North Adams that has given them fits in three of the four matchups they have had this season including a loss just two days ago. The Moose will look to get back on track at 6:30 on the NECBL Broadcast Network and 102.3 FM "The Legends" before coming home on Monday night to start a stretch of eight games in seven days.
