Nighthawks Win Fourth Straight

July 6, 2018 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) - Upper Valley Nighthawks News Release

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. - The Upper Valley Nighthawks captured their fourth-straight victory as they defeated the New Bedford Bay Sox by a score of 5-2 on Friday night at the Maxfield Sports Complex.

Upper Valley struck first in the home-half of the second when Eric Feliz (University of Notre Dame) doubled to get the offense rolling. Just two batters later, Anthony Meduri (Binghamton University) drove a pitch over the right-field fence, giving the Nighthawks an early 2-0 lead.

New Bedford's Christian Aybar countered in the the top of the 4th, driving in the Bay Sox' first run on a sacrifice fly and cutting the Nighthawks lead in half.

The Bay Sox were able to tie the game in the 5th inning when Jacob Yish came around to score on a fielder's choice in which the throw to third base went awry.

A 2-RBI single off the bat of Matt Tarabek (Fordham University) in the bottom of the 5th scored Austin Wilhite (Georgia Tech) and Greg Hardison (UNC Greensboro), putting the Nighthawks up 4-2.

Bryant Bowen's (University of Southern Mississippi) two-out single in the bottom of the 7th plated another insurance run for the home team, and extended the Nighthawks' lead to three runs.

Wilhite went 1-for-3 with a triple and two walks, as he continues to produce offensively for Upper Valley.

Nighthawks starter Brody Lawson (UNC Wilmington) (W, 3-1) tossed five innings, giving up two runs on six hits, and striking out five batters. Reliever Jack Ipsen (Bryant University) pitched the next two frames, surrendering just one hit and striking out two. David Sampson (Plymouth State University) helped the team escape a bases-loaded jam in the 8th, before AJ Franklin (Vanderbilt University) closed out the night for Upper Valley.

The Nighthawks hit the road tomorrow, visiting the in-state rival Vermont Mountaineers at 6:30 PM. The Nighthawks, who currently lead the season series 2-0, could capture the Governor's Cup series for the second consecutive year with a victory tomorrow. If you can't make the trip up I-89, Dan Stein and Andrew Whalen will have all of the action covered on the NECBL Broadcast Network starting at 6:15 PM.

The big night is almost here! On Sunday, the Nighthawks are going back in time to the 1980s. 80s Night will feature a post game concert from the Tricksters, a Guinness World Record attempt for the most popped collars, and all the greatness that was the 1980s.
