Nighthawks Fall to Mountaineers at Home

July 28, 2018 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) - Upper Valley Nighthawks News Release

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. -- Three runs in the top of the seventh was enough to propel the Vermont Mountaineers past the Upper Valley Nighthawks 4-2 on Saturday night at the Maxfield Sports Complex.

Upper Valley falls to 22-18 with the loss, while Vermont improves to 20-22 overall and earns the Governor's Cup for the second time in three years after taking the season series 4-2. The Mountaineers won the last four contests after the Nighthawks jumped out to a hot start.

With Upper Valley and Vermont designating the game as a "staff day," both sides sent a reliever to the mound. Everything went according to plan through the first four innings before both teams plated runs in the fifth. As the Mountaineers scored one in the top half, the Nighthawks quickly countered in the home-half.

Chris Berry (University of North Florida) and Greg Hardison (UNC Greensboro) each drove in a run to give Upper Valley a 2-1 lead through five innings.

Vermont regained the lead in the 7th inning, adding three more runs to their tally on a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly.

Upper Valley starter Brian Weissert (Fordham University) pitched one inning before exiting with some tightness in his bicep. David Sampson (Plymouth State University) followed with a three-inning performance out of the bullpen. Jack Ipsen (Bryant University) pitched a no-hit 5th inning before the Nighthawks turned to the bullpen again. Danny Wirchansky (Pace University) tossed two innings, surrendering three runs on five hits and striking out five. Jordy Allard (Southern New Hampshire University) finished off the night for Upper Valley with two hitless innings.

The team is off tomorrow for the All Star Game, but returns home on Monday for Toy Tractor Giveaway Night, sponsored by Townline Equipment. The first 100 kids will receive a toy Kubota tractor and there will be real tractors on hand too. First pitch between the Upper Valley Nighthawks and the Sanford Mainers is scheduled for 6:30 P.M. Patrick Cavanaugh and Mike Glennon will have the call on the NECBL Broadcast Network and The Legends in Sanford.
