Vermont Takes Final Game of the Governor's Cup 4-2, and Takes Season Series

Hartford, VT - After being down two games in the series, the Vermont Mountaineers would come back and win four straight games against the Upper Valley Nighthawks, including the sixth and final game of the series Saturday night in Hartford to secure the Governor's Cup for the second time.

It was a slow start for both teams, as the first run of the game would not be scored until the top of the fifth, when Vermont would strike. After Samuel Duran (Melbourne, FL/ Nova Southeastern) reached on an error and moved to third on another error, Paul Witt (Harpers Ferry, WV/ VCU) hit a sac fly to deep left field, giving Vermont the 1-0 lead.

Vermont wouldn't hold that lead for long, as Upper Valley would answer with two in the bottom half of the inning. Following two walks, Chris Berry (Seminole FL/ North Florida) would double in a run. He would be thrown out at home trying to score on a single from Gregory Hardison (Greenville, NC/ UNC Greensboro), who did drive in one run on the play.

Vermont's big inning came in the top of the seventh when they would strike for three to take the lead back. After Nolan Tressler (Woodstock, GA/ Georgia Southern) reached on a one out hit by pitch, Jar Parker (Dallas, TX/ Arkansas Pine Bluff), Witt, Bryce Kelley (Rockford, MI/ Michigan State) and Chase Achuff (St. Petersburg, FL/ Eckerd) singled consecutively, giving Vermont the 3-2 lead. Nate Grys (Sterling Heights, MI/ Western Michigan) would hit a sacrifice fly to right, adding the third run of the inning and the fourth of the game.

Vermont's starter Levi Abrahamson (Mountain Home, ID/ Missouri Western) lasted four and a third innings, giving up two runs on two hits while walking four and striking out two. The win for Vermont went to Connor Lehman (Princeton, NJ/ St. Louis), who threw a scoreless inning out of the pen for Vermont. Achuff would pick up the save, going two innings, giving up one hit while striking out two.

Vermont (20-22) continues to cling to their playoff hopes, as they are now three games back of both Upper Valley (22-18) and Sanford (21-17). They will have two days off as the All Star Game will be played Sunday down in Holyoke, MA. The Mountaineers return to action Tuesday against Winnipesaukee (13-27). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30, and can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI, or online via the NECBL Broadcast Network.
