Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, VT - Excellent pitching and timely hitting helped lead Vermont past Sanford Friday night at Recreation Field, 5-1.
Jackson Shaver (Muskegon, MI/ Eastern Michigan) delivered his best start of the year, going six and two thirds innings, giving up only one run on seven hits, while striking out three. Ryan Leckich (Port Neches, TX/ Baylor) threw two and a third solid innings in relief, closing the game out for Vermont.
The Mountaineers struck for two runs in the bottom of the first inning, via two hits and a couple of key errors. After Bryce Kelley (Rockford, MI/ Michigan State) led off the game with a walk, Jordan Anderson (Madison, AL) singled, advancing Kelley to second. Brett Malm (Medford, NY/ Adelphi) singled to left field. Two errors on the play by Randy Bednar (Bethesda, MD/ Maryland) allowed both runners to score.
The game would turn into a pitcher's duel until the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Mountaineers struck for three more. Nate Grys (Sterling Heights, MI/ Western Michigan) led off the inning with a double, and moved to third on a sac bunt. Nolan Tressler (Statesboro, GA/ Georgia Southern) drew a walk, and both came around to score on a single from Trae Hall (Lenoir City, TN/ Motlow State). That would be all the offense would need, as the Mountaineers took the game 5-1.
Shaver got the win for Vermont, and the loss went to Edward Baram (Saddle Brook, NJ/ Adelphi), throwing five innings, giving up two runs (none earned) on 2 hits while striking out five.
Vermont (7-16) plays six more games in a row, taking on Upper Valley (12-10) Saturday evening at Montpelier. The Mountaineers sit 10.5 games back of first place Valley (17-5). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30, and can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 AM, or online via the NECBL Broadcast Network.
