Sanford Mainers News Release
Sanford - The Sanford Mainers power surge continued on Monday night in Winnipesaukee as they launched three more home runs to combine with their lights out pitching for an 8-1 victory on the road over the Muskrats. The Moose have now hit 10 home runs over their last six games and the bullpen allowed just two base runners in the final six innings as they started a long road week with a victory.
Matt Dockman (Hilliard, Ohio/Duke) turned in a great start on the mound, his first of the summer, going two scoreless innings striking out four, as his offense picked him up with a run to strike first as the game moved to the 3rd.
After Randy Bednar (Bethesda, Md./Maryland) reached base to start the inning, Nick Howie (Oakville, Ontario, Canada/Eastern Kentucky) continued his hot hitting at the top of the Mainers' lineup as he drove him home on a sacrifice fly to deep center field as the Mainers jumped on top 1-0.
Winnipesaukee was able to tie things up in the bottom half of the 3rd for the one and only run they would be able to muster all night.
Randy Bednar's bat came alive once again as he came up in the top of the 4th, after a two-out walk to Jonathan White (Lawrenceville, Ga./Presbyterian), and launched his first home run of the season down the right field line as the Mainers took a 3-1 lead. The score stayed the same into the 5th as in the bottom half of the 4th Mike Vasturia (Medford, N.J./Maryland) took the mound with the bases loaded and two outs getting a ground out to end the threat.
In the top of the 5th, Nick Howie stayed hot and hammered a no-doubter over the scoreboard in right center field to build the Mainers lead to 5-1. The Moose would add two more in the top of the 6th as after Biggar singled to lead off the inning, an error on a ball hit by White would score him and the next batter, Bednar, brought White home on a sacrifice fly keeping the offensive efficiency alive and well for Sanford.
The Mainers weren't done just yet as they would add their final two runs in the top half of the 7th on a two-run moonshot off the bat of Austin Biggar, his third of the season, to put the Moose up 8-1 once and for all. The power surge is beyond noticeable for this Sanford team as through the first 15 games they had a total of eight home runs but now have 10 in just the last six.
It was business as usual for one of the deepest bullpens in the NECBL as Mike Vasturia, Angelo Smith (Thornton, Illinois/Michigan), Sean Fisher (Parsonsburg, Md./Maryland), and Jack Weisenburger (Rockford, Mich./Michigan) threw six scoreless innings of relief allowing just two baserunners, one hit and striking out eight.
Sanford has a day off tomorrow but will be on the road for the remainder of the week starting with a 4th of July get together with the North Adams Steeplecats at 6:30 on Wednesday. You can tune in to all the action on 102.3 FM "The Legends" and the NECBL Broadcast Network as the Mainers try and get one back from the Steeplecats.
