Keene Swamp Bats News Release
MONTPELIER, V.T. - Charlie Concannon (St. Joseph's) delivered a go-ahead RBI double to score Jacob Koos (Stetson) in the top of the 14th and the Keene SwampBats (9-11) rallied for a 9-7 victory over the Vermont Mountaineers (6-14) on Sunday night at Montpelier Recreation Field in Vermont.
Koos drew a leadoff walk in the 14th, stole second and scored on Concannon's RBI double. Brandon Smith (Dayton) followed Concannon with an RBI single to stretch Keene's lead to 9-7.
Both runs were charged to RHP Levi Abrahmson (4.1 IP, H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB) who was dealt the loss for Vermont and falls to 0-2 on the year.
RHP Griff McGarry (Virginia) surrendered one hit while walking one and fanning six over four shutout innings of relief to earn the win for the SwampBats and improve to 2-0.
Keene had erased a 5-1 deficit to take the lead in the top of the eighth as Mitchell Golden (Georgia Southern) tied the game with an RBI single and an error charged to Vermont RF Austin Masel (Holy Cross) allowed the go-ahead run to score and give the visitors a 7-6 lead for the time being.
Masel tied the game at seven apiece with an RBI single to shallow right centerfield in the bottom half of the inning.
A RBI groundout in the top of the fourth inning by right fielder Joe Breaux (Alabama) scored Concannon after he doubled and reached third on a passed ball by Mountaineers catcher John Hawk (Alabama) and that opened the scoring for Keene, making the score 1-0.
Vermont scored five runs back in the home half of the frame on two errors, one on a groundout that went off the glove of Buddy Dewaine (Central Connecticut) that scored a run, and another on a pass ball by catcher Alex Griffith (Francis Marion), scoring Vermont designated hitter Nate Grys. A single that went under the glove of Michael Woodworth (UConn) scored two runs, and opened the score to 5-1.
SwampBats starter Jake McLinskey (Kennesaw State) went 3 1/3 innings, giving up five runs, two of them earned, while striking out a batter in a no-decision.
The SwampBats got two runs back in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 5-3. Koos drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on an error charged to Mountaineers CF Bryce Kelley (Michigan State). Concannon delivered a solo shot to right in the inning, his first home run of the summer.
A bases loaded walk issued by Rafael Santos (Broward) in the bottom of the sixth scored Vermont's second baseman Noah Hsue (Washington) adding another run for the Mountaineers, making it a 6-3 game in favor of the hosts.
In the top of the seventh, an error and a walk put two men on before Concannon came through with a two-out, two-run single to bring Keene within a run at 6-5.
Concannon (4-7, 2 2B, HR, 4 RBI, 3 R) had a multi-hit game for the SwampBats, while Vanderbilt teammates RHPs Erik Kaiser (1.2 IP, 3 H) and RHP Justin Willis (2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 5 K) had scoreless outings in relief. Koos drew three walks, stole three bases and scored a trio of runs in the contest.
The SwampBats head to North Adams to battle the SteepleCats on Monday night at 6:30 p.m. and RHP Colby Dunlop (1-1, 5.68) out of UConn will head to the mound.
The next home game for Keene is against these same Vermont Mountaineers on Tuesday (Independence Eve) at Alumni Field. A fireworks display will follow the game, sponsored by Atlas fireworks. You can catch both games on FM 104.1 AM 1220 Fox Sports Keene and necbl.com.
