
Mainers Lose Slugfest

Sanford Mainers News Release
Sanford, ME - The Sanford Mainers and Danbury Westerners combined for 16 runs on 28 hits on Thursday, with Danbury getting the 10-6 win in Sanford. The loss drops the Mainers to 18-19 on the season.
The first inning saw nine runs come across for the teams, starting with five for Danbury. Tanner Krietemeier singled and advanced to second on a Dane Opel walk. Following a double steal Andrew Garner doubled to score both runners for an early 2-0 lead. Tyler Horan walked ahead of a Chad Morgan double that plated Garner. Chase Butler singled home Horan and put Morgan on third. Mike Ford singled to score the final run on the first for the Westerners, giving them a 5-0 lead heading to the bottom of the first.
There the Mainers answered, scoring four runs of their own. Marlon Calbi was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a Brett Mollenhauer single. Justin Leisenheimer doubled to score Calbi and put runners on second and third. Paul Kronenfeld walked to load the bases and Jack Lupo singled home Mollenhauer. Ryan Coppinger doubled to right to score two more and make it a 5-4 game after one inning.
Danbury struck again in the third. Garner singled and advanced to third on a Horan double. A passed ball brought home Garner and moved Horan up to third before Horan scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Butler to make it 7-4 Westerners.
Sanford got one back in the fourth. Eric Hailer walked and advanced to third on a Calbi double. Leisenheimer grounded out to the shortstop to bring home Hailer and make it 7-5.
In the sixth the Mainers cut the Danbury lead to just one. Hailer singled and was replaced by Mike Montville on the base paths. Calbi singled and Mollenhauer reached on a fielding error to load the bases. Leisenheimer singled home Montville to cut the Westerners lead to 7-6.
Danbury added a run in the seventh. Opel doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Jake Gronsky singled to score him and make it 8-6 Westerners.
In the ninth Danbury plated two more to extend their lead. Krietemeier doubled before Opel crushed a pitch over the fence in right for a two-run homer to make it 10-6 Danbury, which proved to be the final tally.
