KEENE, NH - Taylor Williams (Camas, WA/Washington St.) hurled 10 strikeouts over seven innings of work to guide the Keene Swamp Bats past the New Bedford Bay Sox, 5-1, in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action on Thursday night at Alumni Field in front of 1,180 fans.
Keene improves to 24-14 overall. New Bedford falls to 15-23 on the season.
Williams scattered four hits, issued three walks and gave up one run (earned) in the contest pushing his record to a league-best 6-1 overall on the season. In the first two innings, Williams struck out five and fanned at least one hitter in every frame but the third and fourth tying Jeff Thompson (Greenville, IN/Louisville) for the team single-game high in punchouts this summer with 10 on the evening.
Sean Fitzgerald (Mclean, VA/Notre Dame) suffered the loss (2-4) on six-and-two-thirds innings pitched, eight hits, five runs (all earned), one walk and five strikeouts.
Esteban Gomez (Brooklyn, NY/San Jacinto) gave Keene an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with a two-run blast to right field, his third round-tripper of the season.
New Bedford cut into the deficit in the next half inning as Mike DiBiase (Weston, MA/Brown) lifted a sacrifice fly to left field with one out and the bases loaded scoring teammate Jake Berry (Hamilton, MA/Marist) who walked to leadoff the frame. Williams helped the Swamp Bats escaped further damage in the third inducing Trevor Edwards (Toronto, ONT/UNC-Greensboro) into a double play at first base.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Keene extended its lead to 5-1 on back-to-back RBI doubles from Kevin Brown (Northborough, MA/Bryant) and Alex Chittenden (Indianapolis, IN/Louisville). Derek Toadvine (Springfield, OH/Kent St.) also knocked in a run on a fielder's choice plating Gomez.
Kyle Gehrs (Independence, MO/Iowa Western CC) and David Mahoney (Colchester, CT/UConn) closed out the rest of the game throwing two scoreless innings. Gehrs allowed one hit, one walk and two strikeouts while Mahoney pitched a clean 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Brown picked up the Swamp Bats only multi-hit game of the night going 2-for-4 out of the leadoff spot with one run scored and one RBI. For New Bedford, Bradley Shaban (Moseley, VA/James Madison) was 2-for-4 at the plate.
Keene returns to action tomorrow at home against the Vermont Mountaineers at 6:30 pm.
