Sanford Mainers News Release
Sanford Mainer(4-7) pitcher Jeff Singer (1-0, 2.45 ERA) got the ball against the Laconia Muskrats (4-7) to face Mariano Rivera Jr. (0-1, 4.91 ERA) for the second time this season. Singer allowed 3 earned runs with 2 strikeout in 3 innings of work. Rivera tossed 6.2 innings relenting 5 earned runs and 6 strikeouts.
Rivera and Singer were dominant in their last head-to-head match up on June 9th in Laconia, Singer tossed 7 innings of 1 hit ball shutting out the Muskrats and Rivera allowed just one run while fanning 7 in that same match up through 6 innings, but tonight was different, both pitchers lacked their strike-out stuff and we touched up for multiple runs.
The Mainers took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the 5th inning, scoring 3 runs on 3 hits, Sam Dexter drives in an RBI on a single to center field bringing home Nick Lovullo, then Steven Berman launched a shot over the 386 marker on the left field wall for the Mainers first home run of the season a two run blast bringing in Sam Dexter.
Laconia would respond with 1 run in the 6th and 1 run in the 7th inning to tie up the game and force extra innings at Goodall Park. Vinny Zarillo finished 2 for 5 with 2 RBI's, Colton Bottomley finished 1 for 4 but made that one hit count to the tune of 4 RBI's and Ben Miller would finish off the Moose with a 2 run home run in the top of the tenth that capped a 5 run top of the 10th stretching out the score to 10-5.
The Mainers played extra inning baseball for the first time this season and Ryan Johnson (0-1) gets the loss for Sanford as he allowed all 5 runs on four hits, Bottomley doubled to left field driving in Cornelius Copeland, Cory Giesler and Matt Byrne and with a runner on Ben Miller (1) slammed a homer over the right field fence bringing in Bottomley.
The Mainers bullpen was solid early after relieving Singer in the 4th inning, Cody Dube allowed 1 run, Anthony Ciavarella allowed a run as well but Cam Hatch struck out 2 in impressive fashion getting the ball to Johnson to try and hold the tie. Johnson finished the top of the ninth impressively with 2 strikeouts adding to his 10 total strikeouts in 7 innings of work so far this season, but the Mainers threatened in the bottom of the ninth loading the bases but Kevin Stypulkowski grounded out to second base to end the threat.
The Mainers fall to 4-7 on the season along with 1-4 at home and Laconia moved to 4-7. Sanford hits the road to New Bedford (1-10) tomorrow night (6:30 pm) with Christian Lavoie getting the ball for the Moose trying to break a five game losing skid against the Bay Sox.
