Vermont Mountaineers News Release

Holyoke, Massachusetts - The Vermont Mountaineers swept the Valley Blue Sox in a New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) seven-inning doubleheader at Mackenzie Stadium on Saturday evening. Vermont won game one 3-0 and game two 9-5. With the wins, the Mountaineers increase their winning streak to six games and improve to 8-4 on the summer.

The Mountaineers struck early, pushing across a run in the first inning. After the first two batters of the inning were retired, Mike Vigliarolo (St. Louis) walked. Trey Amburgey (St. Petersburg) followed with a single. Rob Knightes (St. John's) proceeded to hit an RBI single to give Vermont a 1-0 lead.

The Mountaineers wouldn't score again until the seventh inning, when Mike Krische (Canisius) crushed a homerun down the left field line to give Vermont a 2-0 lead. Alex Caruso (St. John's) reached first after being hit by a pitch. Evan Harasta (Albany) singled to right, moving Caruso to third. Brett Charbonneau (Le Moyne) followed with a bunt to first, scoring Caruso from third to make it 3-0.

The Mountaineers pitching staff combined for a shutout. Jim McDade (Millersville) threw five and one-third innings. He gave up no runs on seven hits and struck out one. With the win, McDade moves to 1-0 on the season.

Jared Gesell (UNCW) pitched the final inning and one-third. He allowed no runs, no hits and two walks. Gesell struck out two and earned his third save of the season.

Anthony Elia (Seton Hall) took the loss for Valley, falling to 1-1. Elia gave up three earned runs on six hits and one walk. He struck out four in six innings of work.

The Mountaineers also leapt out to an early lead in game two, scoring twice in the top of the first, but Valley tied the game in the bottom of the inning.

The Mountaineers held a 4-3 lead until the fourth, when Blake Tiberi (Louisville) walked with two outs. Amburgey followed with a triple to right center, scoring Tiberi to open up a 5-3 Vermont lead.

The Mountaineers scored four more runs in the fifth to grab a 9-3 lead. Ryan Donovan (Hofstra) singled to right center. Casey Rodrigue (Indiana) ran for Donovan and stole second. Two batters later, Josh Treff (Northeastern) reached on an error by Blue Sox second baseman Joe Carcone (St. Rose) to set the scene at first and third with one out. Two batters later, Krische was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Vigliarolo followed with a single to left that Storm Wilson (Kentucky) misplayed. The ball rolled by Wilson, scoring Rodrigue, Treff and Krische to make it 8-3. After Tiberi walked, Amburgey knocked a single to score Vigliarolo and cap off the four-run inning.

Valley scored once in the fifth and once more in the sixth to close the deficit to four, but that is as close as the Blue Sox would get.

Sam Spencer (Castleton) earned the win to move to 1-2 on the summer. Spencer gave up four runs (three earned) on nine hits in five innings of work. He struck out three.

Chris Erwin (Kennesaw State) took the loss for Valley, lasting just two and one-third innings. He allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits and six walks. He struck out two.

The Mountaineers are back in action Sunday night when they host the Ocean State Waves for a 6:30 NECBL contest at Recreation Field. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
